Lightbulb Ships.tbl

Hello.
Maybe you all konw it, but for unexpierienced it may be some kind of help...

I have begun a "serious" work upon ships.tbl file. I got a whole pack of models and wanted toi have them at the same time.
Probably most of us found the preoblem with 380-kb limit in those .tbls.

I removed the descrptions and put models one after another as long as possible. I noticed every add-one model takes about 2 kB. And you need to remove ca 3 -5 descriptions ( I keep working so I should find it more precisely out) to get 1 kb of the space.
Now i try to find the thinges which can be also removed to improve the space in the ships.tbl file.

Well.
If you do not play dogfights ( quite improbable, but I write it to you as an existing possibility) , you may remove everything what is placed in the $Allowed Dogfight P/S Banks and stands between ( marks).

This operation really increases the place, the effectivness can be compared with that what you obtain with description removal.

I`ll try today evening also with removing descruptions dedicated the shockvawe. ( " When ship dies... and so on) .
Another sollution to try is to remove the weapons which stand for default Primary/secondary Banks. This will make the game a bit frustrating probably, but for those who desperately look for place it can be not so bad solution.

I`ll see if there are any more data wwhich can be sacrificed.
I can say also unytil now I got 8 ships added and the game works correctly.

I`ll write whether I succeded with other probes or not.
BTW, are there some brand new Shivan ships anywhere? I`m looking for something with a brand new model, say a corvette or a capship of that size...

Thanks and now I`ll stop annoying everybody.

Forget trying to circumvent the restriction. We've been doing that forever. We now have the source for the program that reads the tbl's
I say we try to get rid of that restriction and have tbl's in the Megabytes.
I for one am tired of switching tbl's for different campaigns

Afterthought: Although you would think they put the restriction there for a reason

Well.......

As soon as I get the source code I`ll be able to do it, or at least try to do it.

But I have JUST got it and still don`t know how to do this. I need some time for it.

But thanks.

There is a better method for reducing the size of table files which will give you over 100k to play with by using search and replace. It would take you about 30 seconds to do it yourself or you can download the file where I`ve already done it.

Instructions are in questions 13 and 14 of my freespace FAQ (click the link at the bottom)

Thanks to the source code we won`t have to be worrying about problems like this for long but until we get a good stable exe this will give you plenty of room to play with.

Over a certain number of ships in the tbl, and you get problems - missions tend to only 'start' after 2:30 minutes.

I think I had added about 20-25 ships at the time

I do.

I downloaded it and although FRED2 works fine, FS2 crashes whenever I click the main campaign mission door or try to get into the mission tech room. I have lots of mods installed if that could have something to do with it...

EDIT: The tables are definitely the cause; I removed them and it worked perfectly.

Doesn`t sound like the beta is perfectly stable yet.

remove all the white space, i find that the ships.tpl has close to 100k of white space and comments that really does nothing, not like the people from [V] cared to neatly format their tables with it. go to replace put 2 spaces on the find line and one space on the replace line, hit replace all. after that serch for all the comment lines and delete them. also get rid of all the other all the unused ships if you are really desparate. i got 8 ships to fit in the table and left enough space for several more.

the news of the freespace 2 source code is new to me, does anyone have more info and links to source projects, id like to put in my 2 cents.
