Why the courts suck.

http://www.nando.com/technology/story/379154p-3030283c.html

Saw this on Penny Arcade this morning and for some reason it rubbed me the wrong way. I don't know why, though. Maybe its because Judge Limbaugh based his opinion on soley from playing Doom, Mortal Combat (it was actually spelled like that in his report), Fear Effect, and "The Resident of Evil Creek" (which I've never heard before). Well, if you play these games, of course you're going to think that games have no "conveyance of ideas, expression, or anything else that could possibly amount to speech."

Where are the Metal Gear Solids, the Final Fantasies, the FreeSpaces, or any game that's younger than two years old? It's like saying that movies are worthless after all you've watched is Curly Sue and Mission to Mars.

Anyways, I guess I posted this here cause I'd like to get your opinions too, so let's hear them.

well if you arn't any good at them, you won't get to the story, just imagin FS if all you could play was the first training mission

I'd be willing to bet that this judge is about 90 years old and has a stick up his ass.

Yeah...I guess this guy has only played Doom.

And probably never read the manual to StarCraft. There's enough story material in there to fill several seasons of some sitcoms

Uhm... who cares? Less 12-year-old lamers in online games from that town

I'm more upset with the grounds they proved the case on, that video games are not protected by the first amendment. Read the article closer. This is more than just preventing minors from getting M-rated games (which I'm all for, I don't want any kid of mine playing M-rated games before they're old enough. They'd be screwed up enough with me as their father), this is more about censorship. If some big hotshot lawyer wanted to get violence out of games, he could cite this case as a reference.

And the judge determined that games shouldn't be protected under the constitution because he played four out-of-date games that pretty much lack any story at all.

That's what I find upsetting.

'The Resident of Evil Creek' is obviously a media-related bastardisation of Resident Evil...

I figured as much too.

A friend of mine printed out this same article for me about a week ago.

Everyone's got good points here.

Dynamo: Indeed they are outdated, and lacking in story.
Icefire: Yeah; I bet I could write a three-novel series out of Starcraft's back-story.
G-UK: No ****, Sherlock.
Orange: For once, I agree.
