Escort Destoryers

I've been thinking (A dangerous pastime, I know)... Would the GTVA benefit from the development of some type of 'escort destroyer'?

They would be small-scale ships with medium armament and say, a small squadron of fighters. All for the task of looking after supply lanes and nodes away from the front lines, sparing the fleet destroyers from having to divert resources to supply protection and let them get on with the job of winning the war. Just like the escort carriers of WW2.

Just a thought... or would it be easier for them to design a corvette with a hanger or not bother at all?

Yeah I like the idea of escort destroyers. We've got a couple of ships like that in BWO that are Carrier class (GTCa and GVCa) which is basically what you described.

I was under the impression that the carriers were huge ships needing a large escort... or was that another campaign?

But anyway, I think that the general idea of dedicated carriers is a very cool one; they can basically act like a mobile fleet HQ, sending out fighters and bombers to a battle and taking in the damaged ones - attrition until the battle is won.

Plus, covering a carrier battle group under attack when all its ships are away fighting another battle could create a very interesting mission!

A frigate, then?

I was under the impression the carriers in BWO were bigass things *cough*A*g*s*cough*

there is a player flyable gunship (technicaly it's a bomber, but play along) from SOL wich was recently reveiled on the BWO site, it has bomb capasity to make it a wonderfull anti fighter platform

One's nearly the size of a destroyer, the other is much smaller

Well the Balius carrier is a little larger then a Corvette (1.2 km or so) Lightly armed but decked with fighters and bombers.

Overall, I'm against the "larger is better" except when you have a very good reason. (well Shivans are a good reason for well anything! )

Yeah, look what happened to the Colossus. It was very cool, but in my opinion, a squadron of destoryers and escorts would have been more tactically sound.

I remember Homeworld's Multi-Beam Frigates, and I think that a ship of that style would make a superb addition to Freespace 2. Here's my idea for it...

Take the Iceni's chassis, or a Deimos chassis, and equip it with nothing but beams. But not all BFReds or BFGreens. Say, two BFGreens on the front, one each on the side, two slash beams on each side, another BFGreen on the top, one more on the bottom, and the rest as anti-fighter beams. I'd try it myself but I don't know where the turrets correspond to when you set them in FRED2.

Wouldn't that cut anything and everthing to pieces in seconds? Be interesting to see though!

The multi-beam frigates had a short beam life, though... maybe a weapon mod would make it more balanced?
