Other B5 gaming interest??
OH NO!!!
ANOTHER NEW THREAD. I'LL BE STONED TO DEATH!!
heeheehee. Just kidding.
In all seriousness I was wondering if anyone in here does any other B5 related games?
Specifically B5 WARS or Fleet Action board gaming?
I am currently looking for any tournaments that may be coming up in the near future. While I am not good enough yet to compete I would love to see some hardcore gamers hashing it out. Now these are strategy games. While it doesn't have the fast play of computer gaming it takes really knowing your B5 to be able to compete.
Anybody in here play at all??
P.S.
tell me how someone would see this posted at the end of a thread on error messages that has been responed to 35 times?? Just my opinion.

I'm really into B5 Wars, and have a lot of the literature and some of the models but believe it or not, I am not really bothered about playing it as a board game. I have used much of the literature to create my own more balanced board game that is also much simpler and faster to play (in my opinion) and to read for my own enjoyment (I have purchased several games' materials just to read and explore the background).

I've played B5 Wars at conventions before. A lot of fun. But im not very good at it...it was mostly just a public demo, come in, take a ship, have the guys who know the game help you.
It was alot of fun

msmith45: okay, you made your point
. I believe the complaint was about not reading the FAQing FAQ, but I digress
I never played B5 wars, because I never had the money to buy a copy, and never had friends who liked B5 enough.
shame though.. is there an online version? (there should be, if there isn't)

I don't know if B5WARS is playable online. There is a lot of person to person while playing this game. You have to set up certain perameters before starting the game that cannot be changed once the game has started. They go on a control card and then you use it during play, you can keep it hidden from opponents but you're not allowed to make any changes on it. Same as if you arm a fighter in TBP and launch, you can't change your loadout in the middle of flight. You also use the cards to set out mines(nukes) and other little suprises in the game not kown to your opponent.
I am very interested in the idea of this. How hard would it be to have a still map and move pieces around on it. You would also have a section for your control cards that could be veiwed by all such as ship damage and any other allowed items that fall in the rule book. You could even have it set up so all you would have to do is hold your mouse over a ship to see damage, armament, power, etc.. instead of posting control card out in open. As far as setting up cards that cannot be changed within the game that sounds like it would be pretty simple. Once the game was started it could not be changed by being locked in play. there are tons of PC board games that are already based on these scenarios such as Star Trek: The Birth of the Federation or even a simple chess game. What would also make it fun would is that it could be played over time between two or more players. Some use email for recording turns but I like the idea of a dedicated server with saved games that you can reference when it is your turn to move.
anybody else have an opinion??

Combine that with a program that randomly generates appropriate dice rolls and shows the results to both players simultaneously (for trust) and/or even a program that calculates all damage from a volley of fire automatically (such as Fire Control Manager - it's on the net) and this thing would work
The only downside is that you lose out on some key benefits of tabletop games such as it looking nice with painted models, person-to-person interaction etc. but these are small losses to allow people to play online.
Anyway, once the basic engine is designed, this sort of project would be very open to modification and improved graphics.
Anybody interested?

Yes I agree that it takes away from the miniatures but you could do a flat board that converts over to a 3D view for things like making moves and attacking. You would deffinately need to zoom in and out features to look at the whole game map or individual scenarios. The actual B5WARS playing feild is very large. It would look neat to fire a volley at another ship and watch it take realistic damage. Then go back to the 2D map to plan your next move.
As far not having the pretty miniatures to look at, have you seen the cost of them. I would really have to be in it for a while before I could commit that kind of expense to the game. You could have well over a couple of hundred dollars invested just into game pieces.
Not that I am any kind of programmer or anything but I would be very interested in helping out on something like this. I could use it as an excuse to watch the entire B5 series again. "But honey I need to watch it, I need more information for the game." Think she'll by it?
On another note if you have ever heard of the game "Harpoon4" by the writer Larry Bond it is a board game based on naval warfare strategies. Well in march they come out with the computer version of "Harpoon4" with all the control features and interchangable maps from 2D to 3D. It is very cool. I wonder how hard it would be to convert that game engine over to something for B5WARS? Harpoon4 is a very intense and involved game dealing with not only the combat but also the logistical end of fighting a war. If you do not keep supplies coming to the front lines you will eventually lose. And this is not one of those cartoonish strategy games either, it is very real looking and done with the greatest detail.check it out and tell me what you think. I think it would make a great B5 engine.

I can't believe a hundred people have looked at this thread and only 7 took enough interest to even answer it. I guess this wouldn't be a popular game.

I'm a big time Warhammer collector so don't talk to me about spending a lot of money on your hobby
I must have over £1000 worth of Citadel miniatures, collected over the years. It takes a while but is worth it for the end result.
I may get some of AoG's ships to paint because they would look so nice (but use the B5W capital ships and FA fighters and medium sized ships).
What I am getting next are the Lord of the Rings miniatures ('cause they are so cool)
