Thumbs up Extremely Impressed!

I have been watching over your project for quite some time. I almost gave up when I had an idea to check here and found that you released Beta1!

I downloaded everything and went to play, that is when I became even more impressed... Wowsers. The ship models are incredable... The mission "Battle of the Line 2" is so cool when you look and see earth right close to you...

All I can say it good job, and keep up the good work.

I do however have some questions and ideas, some of which you may already be working on.

Question 1. Is the Omega gonna have the rotating section moving? If so, then how? I thought that was a limitation of the FreeSpace2 Engine.

Question 2. In the show, one shadow ship would take out a narn cruiser in 1 blow, is freespace 2 setup for that? Can you make the shadow destroy a ship with 1 blow? It would be cool to see 10 Omega class destroyers obliterated by one mean shadow... :-) Then have a Vorlon ship jump in and take out the shadow ship.

Question 3. Are you gonna add more capital type ships to missions? I think that would be great... Battle of the Line was lacking the volume... I think possibly having 2 to 3 times the amount of capital ships will make things even more cool.

Well guys, keep up the good work.

Thumbs up

In regards to Question 1, the Omega will have a rotating habitat section. If you look at the GTSC Faustus science cruiser in FreeSpace 2, or the "top" of the GTC Fenris and Leviathan warships you'll notice that they all have spinning parts. The Faustus has the two rotating sensor dishes and the cruisers have a spinning radar dish.

1) Yes the Omega will have its rotational section. You must have the game engines confused or you must have missed the GTSC Faustus, GVG Anuket, GTD Orion, and a multitude of other FreeSpace 2 ships that all have rotational sections on them. Not big ones like the Omega, but it really doesn't matter. It'll rotate.

Actually, our EA Orion station rotates already. Go look at that.

2) Not sure if we'll balance it that way. That would be pretty exciting the first time and downright frustrating the next 6000 times. So while Shadows and Vorlons will be immensly powerful, probably a little less powerful than that. Otherwise, fighting them will be impossible, and Sheridan showed that it was not. Trust me to balance it.

3) When we built the mission, most of the ships didn't have LODs (levels of detail), now we could probably sqeeze more ships in....but it would have killed everyones systems.

Hmmm, well FreeSpace 2 came out a long time ago... I myself have a 1.13Ghz AMD Athlon and a Geforce 3 Ti 200. Not top of the line by any means, however I had 4X FSAA on and did not experience any slowdowns.... So I am sure you could add more ships... I agree that if you are running on a TNT2 then you are gonna have a problem... But right now as stated, my computer is not top of the line and can handle it currently with a breeze...

Thanks for the reply! :-) You answered all of my questions.

Yeah, but many of the fans still have about 500MHz PIII and 128 MB of RAM. And your computer is pretty damn good.

Couldnt you offer a High-end system mission? Im sure quite a few of us have systems in excess of 1Ghz.

Well, making missions is not that easy and quickly done and is it really worhwile to make two different mission sets anyways?

I was only talking about one mission.

[pimping]

Just wait for the next release of Lady Rose's Earth minibar war campaign. It will have a real big Battle of the line

You can dl the current release at http://pera.250x.com

FS2's requirements are 266 mhz with a 4MB 3d accelerator

no way that would have survived if there were more ships in the mod.

I'm glad they kept it small for our systems to handle... my comp gave me 6 fps with Battle of the Line - part 1 until I turned the settings down...

ofcourse by next release I should have a better comp, but thats not the case with everyone.

i have a PIII 600 and a ATI Radeon 32MB DDR

blows fs2 reqs away but i can easily make a slideshow out of my system - or your hot POS GayForce 3 with unlodded ships

First of all, your radeon is the problem. Second, the Geforce3 dominates all graphics cards. Third, any video card can be maxed out. My system could out render yours by a factor of 3.

Does not matter anyways, I am not asking for 3 times the detail... All I wanted was maybe 2X more ships... Who knows... I just think this MOD is incredable and would like to see it get even more so! If posseble!

FYI I'll pretend I did not read your rather rude post.

you could have done the background battle trick like was used in the last few missions of FS2, with a bunch of Sharlins in the background (realy far away), you would have only needed two or three real ones (and Shar did have her LODs done, long long ago) to fire beams and unless the player sit's there and waches carfuly there wouldn't be any way to tell the diference

I was actually quite happy with how the Battle of the Line was in the demo, sprites seem to detract from major battles, being a "chump solution" in my opinion. (generally because it's poorly done, like the Battle of Endor in X-Wing Alliance)

Whee!

To ArchAngel777:
Yes Pera has made big battle for Battle of the Line and it is beautiful. But in that third guestion I can answer as mission desingner. There are limitation in FS2 "tonnage" system it can take some amount of ships and their weapons and if that line is crossed it will not even open (this I have proved so many times). In Pera's Botl that limit has drawn in ultimate state. I took missiles out from fighters, so I could add EAS Janus in the end. Yes next (my) release is coming and really soon, it's only matter of days.

PS. And that comp. speed doesn't have so big matter in creating mission, I have 1,4GHz 256MB DDR and so on. And to Ace you are right in some points like in TBP Botl and X-wing: Alliance were little crappy, but they had their good sides right?

i would also just like to correct kazan in saying all ships are fully lodded now !

Except those that are still WIP.

To answer two separate questions:

I think that the original TBP 'Battle of the Line' was great at capturing the atmosphere and portraying "a slice of the action".

Missions can be built with up to 30 capital ships before Fred 2 cannot handle it (not Freespace 2). This number of ships will run just fine on good new systems.

30 capships is in no way a 100% sure number.

I have built missions that are too heavy for my P500 to run, but Fred2 handled them nicely. As Lady Rose mentioned, a very good way to make more ships fit into a mission, is to remove missiles from ships.
