Question for Captain White
Hey. I came to this forum many months ago trying to download the big planet and atmosphere at
http://freespace.volitionwatch.com/babylon/mod/skullar%20cptwhite/earth_atm.rar
http://freespace.volitionwatch.com/babylon/mod/skullar%20cptwhite/Effects_V2.2.zip
Says i need a password and domain name to download them.
Could you or anyone else that has these files them to me instead? kusanagi@jymail.net
Thanks!
(BTW This mod rules!)

this was ages ago, since then the "mod" directory is for members only and those files dont even exist anymore, download the core and high res files, all the files you want are in them.

a 56k modem would be GREAT if it actually DOWNLOADED at 56k. the fastest sustained download speed I've ever gotten is 5kps. I'm awfully tired of being cheated out of 90% of my modem's capacity.

Blame your ISP, data compression, bad phone lines ... 5k/sec is an awfully good sustained transfer rate for a 56k.
I've gotten...mmm, once or twice, I got 5.7k/sec sustained on my 56k, that was pretty nice. Data compression = the best

That is good speed!
My best is 6.2k/sek and my friend best is 18k/sek(and then we noticed it didn't work), of course with 56k. Yes 5k is very good!
Alot of people get confused with the whole 56k thing, the 56k means 56000 bytes a second, whick is 5.6 kilobytes a second.

Nearly, 56 kilobits per second in a modem equates to:
8 bits = 1 byte
56 bits = 7 bytes
1024 bytes = 1 kilobyte
7 kilobytes = 7168 bytes
The maximum data transfer rate for a modem is therefore 7KB/s and most modems sustain a rate of over 5KB/s in real life.

While a home Cable or DSL line has something like 2.0MB/s through 3.5MB/s depending on your provider and the area your in.

If they are paying for metered internet access over a standard phone line then they obviously are either infrequent users or have more money than sense. Unmetered access in the UK has been widely available for a couple of years now, yet AOL still manage to get custom over here (totally free trial, followed by expensive everything else).

I agree, the Americans have better quality of service for internet access but we at least have the option of totally free internet access.

Keep in mind that those speeds are not something you're going to get too frequently. The lines can handel that speed (and probably more) but its just too busy to get up that fast normally.

those with NTL get a very good service.. you get the cheapest Adsl (which is actually faster than dsl, the A standing for advanced) in the uk IIRC, and if you can't afford that, you can get 100% free net access through modem.
it's the unfortunate masses who use BT that suffer... they don't even get cable included as part of their phone line rental

BT customers can get package deals with Sky, and the ntl deal is more like you get a phone line included with your cable deal, as the price for a phone line alone is cheaper.
BT/Sky are cheaper for some users, ntl for others. It depends on the combination of phone and Sky channel usage.

the price of phone and cable is the same as phone alone... now if you want any actual channels on that cable service.. then that's different.
NTL is cheaper, at least for me, considering the same level of free net access costs £14.99 from BT, I think.
