Question Question about Win XP

I know that Windows XP is based on the NT architecture. NT needs the service pack things to make most games work. So my question is this: does Windows XP still need the service packs to make games work or will it just work with DirectX?

Microsoft is incredibly annoying and monopolistic...however, they aren't complete morons.

XP will work with games and from the sounds of it, without a hitch. I don't think it matters if your using Home Edition or Professional, they both work about the same.

Yes, its based on the NT Kernel in a variety of ways (I'm not familar with them) and thats how it owes to its stability.

I've got XP Pro, it's the best there is...

Now, would someone tell me about the installation procedure? I've heard rumors that XP has you call up a tech person, get some registration code, and that you can't install off of the same CD onto different machines. Will someone confirm this?

"GTA2"? you mean FS2 or is it something else...

Anyways, pre-release reviews kept saying that you could only install XP on one machine per disc. Will someone who personally installed this monster please confirm or deny this?

You can only install on one machine. You then activate it online (or through tech support - online is about 10 seconds apparently).

Well, XP already have the latest DirectX 8.1.
I think M$ will update it seperately from service packs, or both.
XP, as well as NT4 and W2k will be updated by service packs, better download and install them. Windowsupdate can be used like in W98, many smaller security patches and like have already released.

Mewgen, so the aswer to your question is "Yes" in Kosh style.

Have you tried to put compatibility mode on? Like pressing the right-mouse button to the application file and then you just put Windows 98/Me compatibility mode on and it works like a dream...

Matter in fact, Microsoft is already making a service pack 1 to XP. There was a link to it's Alpha or Beta (?) version on m3dzone.com not so long time ago.

And A2597. Not every game works in XP like a dream. There are problems with the Need for Speed series and on Max Payne, the 32-bit color mode somehow lags the mouse...

Add to previous service pack question:
Service packs are just update packages that fixes bugs or adds new features. In NT4, it also updated DirectX that wasn't available seperately. But Win2k and XP DirectX can be updated seperately just like W98 DX.

WinXP Home edition have NTFS support.

Electronic Arts games are known to be real buggers when it comes to W2k and XP. EA is just an ass when it comes to release some compatibility patches for their already released games.

I have had and still sometimes have that mouse lag problem, it is not W2k or WinXP problem, but it depends on what display adapter drivers you are using.

I've been lead to assume that NTFS is the better file system. Am I right? Would a FAT32 system be able to read my NTFS system or not (I don't think so but things could have changed)?

No it can not, the 2 systems are not compatible.

Posted by Mr. Fury on 11-22-2001 09:31 PM:

Well, if OS supports NTFS then it can read it even if it is installed on FAT32.

So, Win98 can't read NTFS but W2k can even if it is using FAT32. Not sure if NT4 can read newer NTFS file systems, W2k and XP NTFS is newer NTFS than that NT4 uses.

And NTFS is generally better file system than FAT32, a bit faster, less fragmentation, more secure and generally more effective.

That is one reason why I am using two hard drives, everyone should have two partitions. Secondary partition is FAT32, I have stored all zip, rar, exe, music, videos, backups and other stuff on that drive. If something goes wrong on primary partition, data loss is not bad. And you can always boot from XP cd and reinstall the OS if needed.
