heh, wanna have a killer ship in the mod? ;)
check these out!

"The Artemis was built to replace the Hyperion as Heavy Cruisers. The Artemis incorporates the latest technology, including artificial gravity, fusion beam cannons, and a gravitic drive engine. The ship has a much greater fighter complement due to her larger fighter bays. Hangar decks are located in the front and lower areas of the ship. "
Too bad this one ain't canon..

hmmmmm....seems kinda wierd that the replacement for the Hyperion class cruiser is bigger than an Omega. Heck, it looks as large if not larger than a Warlock! I think if it were scaled down in size it would make a lot more sense as a cruiser. Besides, apparantly the Tempest is what's going to be in the mod and from what I've seen of it it's much more realistically scaled and designed as a cruiser-type ship meant to supplement the Warlock.
Yeah I don't like that Artemis 2, the original used in the Dilgar and Minbari Wars looked a lot better. And the Tempest was the ship used to replace the Hyperion.

Well, as far as I know, cruisers were bigger then destroyers in the second world war..

yeah, that's right.
I didn't understand from the beginning why they called the Hyperion a cruiser.
The Hyperion is/was a cruiser compared to the rest of the fleet (the Nova is a dreadnought - larger still), at least when it was built. The Omega "Destroyer" is actually a misnomer. It is a Cruiser but for some reason JMS desided to call it a destroyer. Hope that helps

yeah, B5 is somewhat screwed up in it's labeling of ship types. Nowadays, and since WWI it's been like this, from smallest to largest:
Patrol/torpedo boat
Corvette
Frigate
Torpedo-boat destroyer (WWI only)
Destroyer
Light Cruiser
Heavy Cruiser
Escort carrier (WWII only)
Battlecruiser
Assualt carrier (modern Marine)
Battleship
Fleet Carrier
B5 it seems like this, at least for EarthForce:
Gunship
Corvette
Frigate
Heavy Cruiser
Dreadnought
Destroyer
Carrier (non-cannon)
ivaneski's basically got it, but I'd like to just make a couple modifications:
Patrol/torpedo boat (PT) - WWII only basically...
Corvette
Frigate (FF)
Guided Missile Frigate (FFG)
Torpedo-boat destroyer (very similar to a DE)
Destroyer Escort (DE)
Destroyer (DD)
Guided Missile Destroyer (DDG)
Light Cruiser (CL)
Heavy Cruiser (CA)
Monitor (cruiser hull w/ very few heavy guns, like IIRC the British Monitor had 2 15" cannon in a front turret and some light armament everywhere else, but nothing like a WWII heavy cruiser's armament of ~10 8-inch)
Battlecruiser (BB) [fast as a cruiser, armed like a battleship, armored like a tin can]
Battleship (BB)
Escort carrier (CVL) ("Light Carrier" basically)
Assualt carrier (modern Marine carrier, like the Wasp)
Fleet Carrier (CV)
...just adding a couple. Keep in mind this is a very bastardized list that tracks classes from the late 1800s to the 21st century ... so it's not perfectly accurate. Still, for a general reference, it's not so bad. I pulled carriers out seperately since it's not really fair to compare them size-wise to anything else, but consider an Essex fleet carrier (standard fleet carrier for the USN in mid/late WWII) was about the size of a battleship, and the Nimitzes are the biggest ship in the USN at present...Escort Carriers are like medium-large freighters, I guess like small-battlecruiser size hulls...something like that.
And yeah, the () things indicate the USN naming designation, when applicable (yeah so I can't remember what they call corvettes. Shadddddddddddup.
)

you UGLY!
hey hey, you UGLY!
that song says it all.
Not to be mean, but I've seen a LOT of non-canon ship designs and apart from the ones designed by Lars/Hyperspace (Monsoon, Triton, Tempest) everything else is quite ugly.
So as the team has said before, dont worry about these ships till the first 5 canon-ship releases are done. And that is far away.

Corvette == (K)
That design doesn't look good at all.
Tempest is half-canon, and it is meant to replace old Hyperion/Midwinter cruisers. Tempest's level of technology is same as Warlocks. Tempest is not much bigger than Hyperion, but thanks to newest tech, even a ship of this size can have some serious firepower.
Following pics aren't the best, but design is still good.

I love the Tempest
Escort Carriers were built only by the US during WW2 (as far as I know) and they used the base hulls of smaller battlecruisers. Because the hulls were not suited to carrier operations, most escort carriers listed as much as 10 degrees to the side.

For all the rest of you.... don't come here.
As stated in the first post in this thread, the Tempest was designed to replace the Hyperion as a type of heavy cruiser to support the main capital ships. Therefore it follows that it's design was based upon the Hyperion - taking advantage of a generally sound design, just out of date.

I am SO jealous that I didint design or model the tempest... love that ship
and youre right, those pictures dont do the mesh justice

Well, I think the Artemis looks nice, but opinions differ.. ow wel..

It's "bigger and badder" syndrome - people don't want to make a small, powerful, but not overwhelming ship - they model gigantic planet-killers.
I personally like "small" attack ships like the Tempest if they LOOK mean. And the Tempest looks mean. I like

I have to agree. I'm getting pretty sick of the bigger is better phenomenon. Its good to a point, then it stops being interesting.
The Tempest is a great little ship. Its well designed, it fits well with EA design philosophy, it draws from both the Hyperion and the Warlock, and its a great Hyperion/Midwinter replacement.
Its one of those non-canon designs that will make it into the MOD.
