A Few Worries............
1) Since you have no shields explosions from ships really do alot of damage. Fighters at a reaosnable range do damage and cap ships just do mega damage. Will this damage be lowered in the later releases?
2) How do you jump out at the end of a mission......the missions i got to the end of wont let me leave.
Most of the damage i take is from blast damage, and i like it. It really makes you play freespace differently, you have to just get better at killing fighter our of blast range(~150m).

You need to be close to one of your cap ships or a jump gate in order to jump out.
Stay away from fighters who's reactor core is breaching 
This is definately harder and more demanding than playing with FreeSpace 2's ships, although quite a bit more like playing FS1 before shields were introduced.
Combat in this MOD is more difficult, but definately not impossible. Its my job to make sure that ships are balanced, that being the player does not suck, and that you have plenty of freedom to do what you want in the MOD (tactically) and still come out alive.
If we really wanted to fry the player (and some people would probably try and let it happen), we could have just let the Sharlin fire at fighters and capital ships alike with the same beams. Think how much a Heavy Neutron beam as an AAA beam would hurt.
