crash bug?

im running windows XP with a geforce 2 MX and nvidia's 12.90 drivers,
i was in the first mission, and when i blew up one of the nails, i got a blue screen right at its moment of death saying something like "irq not less than or equal too" and some 50 number strings.

Posted by Sigma957 on 10-17-2001 03:52 AM:

I have a gf2 with the 12.90 drivers and it doesn't crash with me, it might be windowsxp causing it as I use ol win98...

well I never switch OS before it is proven that the new OS allows my machine use all its potential that the old OS didnt.
Ex. I swithched from W95 to W98 when I got an AGP 3d card. W95 doesnt always recognize and work well with some newer hardware, as well software.
Right now W2000 and XP showed me just the opposite, they fail to work with all the stuff I got and are slower with games (why worry with speed in Office or autocad at 1GHZ+anyway?) so I'll stick with W98.

win2k sp2 outperforms win98se (and esp win98 initial) on all the hardware setups i have ever seen

win2k is a little slower in games than win98 byt it newer ewer gives a blue screen like win 98 does that means windows newer crashes

I had this happen in Win2000 as well, although not with TBP which I have only just (read: about 20 minutes ago) found.

In my case, it ended up being the NVidia drivers. Updating them worked like a charm. And I believe they just released a new WHQL set for WinXP so you might want to see if that helps.

Also, Alphakiller mentioned sound cards... the SB Live series does cause a lot of trouble with VIA chipsets. If you have that combo, try pulling the sound board and see what happens.

Incidentally, I'm d/l'ing the tc as we speak. I didn't even know this existed until today... thank you gents for this.

Cheers,
MaelMan

Trying to play Dungeon Keeper 2.

You know, it isn't impossible to BSOD Win2K. I certainly see them enough in different situations to say that they aren't uncommon.

Cheers,

I run W2K, SP2. I've gotten BSODs before. Much harder to do than in 98, where sneezing could cause a BSOD, but it's still doable. For a day-to-day user, sure, it'll probably never happen, but for a heavy user and tweaker like me, yeah it happens

One thing Win2K particularly doesn't like is when you copy the whole install + files over to another drive and try to run it from the new drive. With Win 98 you could do that easily, but 2k has fits.

Tell me about it... I managed to kill a Win2k install by accidentally changing its drive letter. Reinstalling and Restoring 8Gb of data is a lot of fun...

About "irq not less than or equal" I used to occasionally get the same BSOD whenever I went to run a game that used EAX on my SBLive! when I ran 2k. I'm thinking it was because when I installed 2k it installed itself in ACPI mode and when 2k does this it "helpfully" assigns every device on the PCI bus the same IRQ. However when I upgraded to XP everything sorted itself out...

I know it's a bit late for this info, but if you ever run into this again, you can boot to a Win98 floppy and run 'fdisk /mbr'. Clears it up every time.

That wouldn't have solved my problem... What happened was that Win2k lost its security database and as a result wouldn't let me log in. In the end I set up a parallel install (2k is really great about that, you can as many seperate installs as you have partitions), backed up my files and reinstalled from scratch. Needless to say I turned off the option that automatically logged you off if it couldn't find the security database

i dont have sb live, OR via chipset. i have an AMD 756 chipset. i would go back to the new det XP drivers if they werent full of memory leaks.. *tested and tried*.

I'm running WinXP, Radeon and SB Live! Value.
All games I have tried works great.

I don't know what causes your problem, might be because of ACPI. If enabled, W2k and XP tries to put all hardware under the same IRQ. Especially Live! is picky for this.

One way is to disable ACPI and then install XP again, there is also a way to do this without reinstalling XP but I don't know what it is.

You got this problem to huh? The Detonator 21.85 (and probably the WHQL Detonator 21.83s as well) drivers appear to solve this issue, I've been using them for nearly two weeks without any sign of trouble.

Actually I noticed that XP is a hell of a lot better than Win2k in terms of IRQ management in ACPI mode. All my PCI cards, even my SBLive! all appear to have their own IRQs. Itss just another reason why I haven't junked it entirely just yet even though Final Fantasy VII still doesn't work right (which I'm beginning to suspect is a problem with my nVidia video card and its lack of palletised texture support).
