The United States was brutally attacked today by some bull****ing terrorist who can't fight fair and has to sneak. How about they try that **** when we know it's coming. Over 10,000 predicted killed, I predict the Middle East will be turned into a parking lot for the good old U. S. A

Probably more like 30,000 when the figures come out. I think everyone here is shocked.

Im sure once they figer out how did it they will blow them off the plant. The only reason they sneak around is becues they now there no match for the US miltary. If we went to war with them it would be offer in 1 day proble my be. But i hope we dont go to war. Im at good age to get drafted in to the US Miltary im 18.

What they did was unhuman. A friend of mine that lives 300 km from me called me and said: TURN ON THE TV!!! Then I just saw the second plane rammin the tower live, man was I shocked... I just hope that they find the bastard who did this, and send him to the hell that he came from...

Another thing that I don't like is the fact that the other guys started partying when they knew of that.... man those should be wiped out of the map, but that would make even more bloodshed...

I live on Long Island. As a consultant, I move from assignment to assignment but a lot of them put me in the shadow of the WTC. All told, I've probably spent a dozen years on those streets that are now covered with rubble. I was there in the 70's when the WTC was being built. I saw them fit the same facade to the towers that now forms the twisted backdrop to so many newscasts. No, I wasn't there Tuesday. My current assignment is on Long Island. But let me give you some snapshots:

Immediately after the attack the phone system was overwhelmed. It took me 3 hours to make contact with my son and daughter-in-law - they both work in Manhattan.

My wife's principal's daughter worked in the second tower. After the first tower was hit, the girl called her mother to say something had happened. The principal told her daughter to get out of the building. Shortly thereafter the second plane hit. With the phones dead, the principal didn't hear anything for 5 hours, when her daughter finally was able to get through.

There was an almost endless stream of emergency vehicles heading towards the city. Most of these manned by Long Island's all-volunteer fire departments.

There are cars in the Long Island Railroad parking lots that haven't been moved in days.

There were individual students taken from classrooms on Tuesday. They've yet to return.

Another of my wife's co-worker's father heads the NYC fire department's emergency response team. They arrived early and he sent his 200 men in while he stayed at a command post. There was another explosion. All 200 are missing. The explosion blew the commander across the street and destoyed the team"s fire engines. He survived and wants to go back.

After the phones cleared, you started calling friends - basically to see if they were alive.

You know that you've lost friends or co-workers. You just don't know who they are yet.

It hurts.

today, i saw that the american spirit is alive and well. i was watching TV, the news of course, we only have three channels, and i saw a story about ladder company #5 of the New York Fire Department. when they lost their 3/4 million dollar hook and ladder truck, they got a hold of a badly mauled chevy full size pick up truck, still partially damaged, and fashioned themselves a new truck using peices of the old one. they now use that truck to go the the site where the towers once stood, to look for their brothers. this, ladies and gentleman, is the American spirit.

I've watched with a kind of numb shock, and even felt physically sick after seeing the events at WTC on Tuesday. I offer my condolences and sympathies towards all of those touched by tragedy, as small as my contribution to this support is. The stories coming out of the area, such as Geezer's, are horrible ones that will stay with me forever.

However, at the same time as we mourn the dead, and respect their loss, serious questions need to be asked. Perhaps these will be painful and complex, and perhaps they will not have entirely agreeable answers. Nevertheless, they must be asked. Beyond the "should we use ground troops or just nukes" debate there MUST be one about the sanctity of life, primarily. The hard questions about the failures of U.S. Security, and the contribution of Western foreign policy towards this event may be able to wait (and they will need a lot of attention, patience and forbearance), but a question about retaliation must be posed now.

Let's assume for a moment that Osama bin Laden did assist in this terrible act in some way. What is the response that we want here? Should he be killed - with or without trial, his motives explored or ignored? What will this action result in? A thousand more 'martyrs' for the cause? A true end to terrorism on a massive scale?

Furthermore, and far more crucially, can the civilians of a country enduring a 3-year drought, 5.5 million of whom are surviving on food aid, who have no television, newspapers, running water, electricity; no concept at all of what the World Trade Centre even was be held responsible for the attacks that may have originated from their country? By killing civilians deliberately, or as collateral damage do we not lower ourselves to the base level of the terrorists? The fact of the matter is, there are too few extremists for a 'proportionate' response, and too far spread, burrowed too deeply for immediate vengeance to be exacted with any degree of accuracy.

Even from the perspective of the U.S. military there are serious issues regarding Afghanistan. Britain fought two wars and lost both, and even the might of the Soviet Union was crushed in the mountains so unsuited for our concepts of warfare. Afghanistan was, for the Soviets, a Vietnam-type event. What's to say that it won't become another, once again?

You may call me a heretic for not chanting along with the majority for more blood and more death. Do so if you like. One of the great strengths of the internet for the debate of ideas is that you can only attack my ideas, not me. Debate is raised beyond the physical.

Sooner or later these questions have to be asked. The sooner we start, and the longer we debate, the clearer and better the answers may be. I'd also like to point out I'm not Anti-American (I fully intend to study America as part of my University degree).

Oh, and sorry to go all wordy, but it's a serious issue and I've given it a lot of thought.

Kellan is right, the last thing we need here is yet more bloodshed. While I still feel that the people responsible should be put on a missle and shot into the sun, it wouldn't be right to take out our anger on the innocent people of another country. While the people who planned the attack may be in Afganistan (or another similar country) the rest of the population should not be made to suffer because of them (Iraq anyone?).
