Please explain the story behind Silent Threat!

Hey everyone! My name is Jay, and believe it or not, I used to work for Planet Freespace, back in the day! If no one remembers what Planet Freespace was, it was what Freespace Watch was before it got the new Freespace Watch name. My main job was mission reveiws or something, who cares! Let's get to my point...

I played Silent Threat and beat it the second it hit my video game store. I had one problem with it... the campaign totally threw me off when everyone started getting mad at the GTI. I thought the player was working for the GTI. Then, all of a sudden, the player is trying to get rid of the GTI. What happened? Did I miss something? Will someone please explain to me the ENTIRE story of Silent Threat, from beginning to end, so that I can understand it?

Why did I not ask this question back then? I dunno! I recently have begun playing Silent Threat again, and remembered how this totally threw me off.

The GTI had been secertly making advances in shivan technology and had been plannin a rebellion for quite a while. They kept alot of things secret, like the fact they knew about the shivans before the attack on Ross 128. So after planning this big ass rebellion for a while they finally do it. They break away form the GTA and go to war. Then the GTA discovers that GTI was buildin a super destroyer, like the lucifer. So they tell you to go destroy GTI base of operation and hope you lure the GTI Hades (the super destroy) YOu do exacltly that and blow that thing sky high and win.

I guess its been spelled out above, but I'll go into a little more depth.

The GTI, being the chief intelligence agency for the GTA, was given broad discretionary powers. Access to R&D, ships, destroyers, research posts, and whatever they needed basically. With that kind of power, its only a matter of time before it becomes corrupted. The GTI wanted to make a bid for power and had no doubt been planning it for a very long time. I'm not entirely sure what their motives were completely, but we know that they were there at Ross128 watching. Perhaps they even played a part in luring the Shivans into Terran space, its unknown.

After The Great War, the loss of Earth and the instability that followed provided the perfect atmosphere to take over and install a new government. The GTSC Einstine probably was sent to keep the Vasudans turned the other way, and perhaps even the events that percipitated the first mission of ST were spurred on by undercover agents. Except, other GTI agents stepped on their toes and the Einstine was discovered. One of the escape pods was recovered while the other disappeared.

Finally, the GTD Krios (thats the name I think) had captured enough evidence to point fingers directly at the GTI (which the ship was working for anyways). So the GTI tried to silence their voices and destroyed the ship. Fortunately the escape pods managed to get out. The GTA declared war on their intelligence agency. They discovered that the GTI had some kind of presence in Ross128, and finally they discovered their secret outpost, the Jotunhiem. Onboard was Shivan technology and Shivan captives. The GTA destroyed the installation and the GTI desperately deployed the almost finished Hades destroyer. It was also destroyed by a GTA attack force.

The materials recovered were burried by the GTVA when it was created. Some of them might have given an edge that we don't know about during FreeSpace 2. Command may have known Bosch's plan the entire time, maybe even meant for him to do what he did. All part of the game.

Don't feel ashamed...I'm the one that took time out of my days to truly understand the Silent Threat story and then eventually convey it to everone.
