Shockwaves?

Are you guys going to use FS2 shockwaves for cap ships? I hope not, i never really liked the look of them. Is it possible to make your own shockwave animation?

Sorry man, most likely they are hardcoded. At least I haven't seen any mods that has different shockwaves.

Posted by Kazan on 05-04-2001 08:03 PM:

they are most definantly NOT hardcoded... i have my own shockwaves on my system.. look at any screenshots i've taken, the shockwave color on my system is different than the others - and that is no render artifact, i changed the color

Ewerything's ok as long as those waves move FAST!!!!

Oh... and I never liked to look when somebody blew up. Whose idea was to use so many shockwaves...? Like when Colossus blew up, it was horrible to watch those slow moving spheres. And there was about two dozen of those ugly thingys...

When I started tbl tweaking... Almost first thing I did, was to reduce the number of those youknowhat!
Next I speed them up and now they are fine...

Ahh, so I was wrong then. No matter.

Posted by LAMBO on 05-04-2001 10:17 PM:

They would look better if the were perfectly round and moved very fast.

could be done....i'll have a play at some point but i will probably want someone to rendor something for me to convert

Actually this is not a hard job to do .
I played around with shockwaves earlier ( and even tried to replace them with a short and bright "bang" ( sphere )
Well , sooner or later we will have a nice wave , so don't be alarmed , guys .

Prophecy uses the 3d effect the 3d-card offers , while FS2 uses a regular ani-file.
We can have whatever we wanna have...

I've seen a lot of other science fiction shows and films using perfectly spherical full colour spectrum shockwaves. Not scientifically accurate perhaps. But pretty none the less.

Anyone remember FS1 shockwaves? They were great

Posted by Mr. Fury on 05-05-2001 11:29 AM:

Yes, FS1 shockwaves are much better than FS2 ones.

Posted by Skullar on 05-05-2001 11:45 AM:

so , lets just import them.

Posted by CptWhite on 05-05-2001 03:11 PM:

I'm bringing this back up because I wanted to know have you been thinking about this lately...
Will there be better looking shockwaves for our enjoyment in the near future...?

The standard FS2 ones are still in there in the latest beta I played ... but TBP guys are probably focused on more important things

I like FS2 shockwaves when they go fast, but when the Colossus explodes it becomes - sucky. I don't care what you make of the shockwave but I hope it will be cool

You need some taste man

We need a new shockwave, yes...but I'd like it to be influenced by what we've seen on B5 if possible and then it needs to be done.

Now what we've seen fairly commonly on B5 (it happens only for a few seconds - but I guess its the atmosphere escaping) is a grey sort of expanding wave (almost distortion like rather than something physical). It shouldn't be as coherent as anything in FS1 or FS2.

Yes i like the idea of a very subtile, fast moving shockwave. I think little touches like custom shockwaves, and custom damage particle effects(the orange smoke the leaks from damaged ships) will make the mod seem less like a regular freespace 2 mod.

I'm in the process of making a (non b5) mission and was testing
it to make sure the objectives worked OK. So I just ran it through
at 4x speed, the shockwaves looked MUCH better at that speed.
Having said that so did the large ship movement and beam fire.
It looked more, for want of a better word, realistic.
