Red Faction: VBB InfoBits
Posted by WildWolf:
Alan Lawrance (hah! I spelled his name right!), Lead Designer, posted a few good pieces of info on the VBB.
Regarding the getting in and out of vehicles, Alan responded to a post by ivan:
ivan: How about we do it like this... You have to run up to a designated entry point on a vehicle (varies from vehicle to vehicle). You then hit use and a hatch (whatever) opens. Another tap of the use key causes you to automatically enter the vehicle to the cockpit mode. I think this is cool, because it satisfies both stances. It's still quick and painless, yet it keeps the realism and flow of the game intact. It will also solve the popping out of the vehicle at wrong places problem as well as allowing other people to try and open the hatch on a controlled vehicle and toss in a satchel charge. I don't see any in vehicle fighting though.
Alan: I'm reading this thread with great interest, since I've been pondering ways to make vehicle entry more realistic without making it cumbersome for the player.
I really like Ivan's idea of pressing Use and seeing a hatch open up. Pressing Use again would then put you into the cockpit. Once you're in the cockpit, pressing Use again puts you outside the vehicle (with the hatch open).
Some issues:
1) What about the sub? Can you only get in/out if the sub has surfaced? I guess this would make sense, but it might be limiting if a player wants to bail from his sub when he sees a torpedo coming his way.
2) Modelling the interior (even a basic cockpit) is going to add faces and require more textures. More detail here means we are giving up some detail elsewhere on the outside of the vehicle.
Throwing a grenade or satchel charge into a cockpit just seems too cool to pass up though.
Regarding the destruction of vehicles: armor piercing bullets will be able to penetrate cockpits and take out drivers.
Interesting stuff. That thread is here.
Regarding the in-game server browsing for multiplayer, Alan says this:
I like in-game server browsers. I like them a lot.
Ok.
Also, Alan had this to say regarding the amount of Geo-Modding that will go on during multiplayer games:
The level of geomods (i.e., how many are allowed, if at all) will be a server setting.
Good stuff. You can check out that thread here.
