How do you cool guys do them?
In programs such as Correl or PSP, you can create a line as an "object" and then expand, contract, or stretch various axis.
In the few I've done for command briefing animations, I have several of these lines layered and anti-aliased to make an effect identical to the beam weapons in the game.
Now, I can even use the beam weapon in-game's .pcx files as a texture on the lines if I wanted to...
