Ya want to see some real weapons?
Yo, Yo! I have made a decent quality beam weapon for fighters (yes, really). It's called the Xian, and it deals almost as much damage as the s-AAA-weak. Anyway, the weapon doesn't act like a real beam weapon, due to the limits in the game engine... anyway, you can feel free to look at the screenshot, and look at my source code, but it's copyrighted, so you can use it, but don't publish or modify it without asking nicely, k? Also, do you folks have plans for an extremely powerful anti-juggernaut type beam cannon? If so, I have some wav files in my main directory. They're pretty big (200k).

By "source code" you mean the table entry?
I've done fighter beams before, it's not hard at all. You used a fast fire rate and a small trail.
We did that for the Nial with the Babylon Project MOD.
i've done several for the hidden terror campaign only one really looks like a beam though and its probally the one i like least - the others come complete with lightning effects - got to say it annoys me that the one from twilight is better than mine though - although i haven't seen it going when moving at speed it never looks the same

I don't think those are rail guns.
Rail guns are electromagnetic accelerators. Its a really simple shell...it just needs to be magnetic....and then you power up your coils and fvoom!
no silly, not railguns, Rail Guns as in mounted on a rail car. it was the only way those really big ones could even be moved. they also used it as a part of the recoild mechanism. they would let the car and the engine roll a little to soak up the recoil energy.
see that first one is one the german big bertha artillery cannons that hurl a 7 ton shell 70 miles (i am pretty sure i have those numbers right, though it migh not be for that particular rail gun)
Gustav. Big frikken gun.
yep, thats the one. thats big bertha.
Ive blown one of those up

This may or may-not be possible (the latter is more like it) but i'd like to see new beam cannon charging effects you know, take the golgotha's main gun for example, instead of the weapon barrel gathering particles you see the two "prongs" in front of the ship crackle with energy and it just gets more and more intense and then it fires.
Possible or not it WOULD look rather cool no?
Would look cool, but I don't think you could pull it off, at least not without some rather creative and complex work.
Nope, can't do that unfortunately. Not without sacrificing something else and making the process alot more complex.
youcould use a particle chargeing effect, give it a lot of particles in a small FOV
