Skarz working on Red Faction

I don't know if VW ever posted this but for those of you who haven't seen it, check out Scott "Skarz" Blinn working on Red Faction.

Could that be Red he's using?

Yeah.. that's an early version of RED. We posted that a while back when that article was posted.. it was an interview with Scott Blinn with VE that included a couple of screens from RED. They're in the PC screens section.

... nothing against him.. but um.. what's the difference between having him as a level designer or having someone else? They're still working off the same concept art and storyline and whatnot.

Just because you're working off the same concept and story doesn't mean you have the same talent level. I'm sure if you gave Icefire or Kellan a detailed list of objectives for a FS2 mission you'd get a much better mission than if you gave that list to someone who's never touched FRED before. (Ok, that's exagerating a bit, but you get the point?)

Also, I'm sure the level designers are given certain freedoms in creating the levels. I don't think the Lead Designer sits behind the level designer all day and screams "NO! DON'T PUT THAT ITEM THERE YOU FOOL!". It's not a very productive thing to do and if that was indeed the case, I can see why Skarz quit.

I'm sure Volition found someone who's more than talented enough to replace Skarz though, so there shouldn't be any worries. (Unless V hired the Lead Level Designer for Daikatana to take his place... ugh)

Matt Boynton is now lead level designer and they now have many more level designers since when Skarz worked there.. for instance: Nate.

So, in a strange way, Skarz is the reason Todd has a job?

Well, Nate replaced Skarz sort of (even though they did hire more level designers anyway) and Todd replaced Nate so in a way, yeah I guess.

Oh and I think Dynamo is right about level designers, you do need some talent...what if Scott Baio or KillCreek were allowed to make maps? I'd be hell on Earth I tell ya!

It wasn't really because Skarz left.. this was kindof long after he had left.. Nate pretty much had the choice to do whatever he wanted because he wanted to do something else (open jobs)... so he took one of the many open level designer positions.
