Freespace 1 Weapons and Ships-The Good and Bad
I already asked about what all you hippies thought of FS2's equipment, so what do you think of FS1? I say...For Best...
Fighter: Apollo or Athena(better fighter than bomber)
Bomber: Ursa or Medusa(not much choice, huh?)
Cannon: Banshee or Prometheus(again, not much choice)
Missile: Interceptor or Hornet
Bomb: Harbinger or Tsunami
And worst...
Fighter: None, they're all good
Bomber: Athena(when used as bomber)
Cannon: ML-16(NO shield damage)
Missile: MX-50
Bomb: Harbinger#End
------------------
...And just because I'm new here doesn't mean you can laugh at me.
The best fighter: GTF Apollo! The rest doesn´t matter!
The athena can not be considered best fighter because it is not a fighter. it is a light bomber. It can be the worst bomber though...
BEST:
Fighter= Valkerie
Bomber= Ursa
cannon(s)= prometheus and banshee used together
missile= hornet
WORST:
Fighter= Ulysses
Bomber= Athena
cannon(s)= Flail
missle= mx-50

Umm Snipes, the Apollo kicks major ass. It can't use the D-Advanced, Flail, and Banshee. It also can't use the Synaptic, Tsunami, Harbinger, and D-Missile. I don't use any of that except for the Banshee, and I wouldn't want to bomb in an Apollo anyway. And Asta, I didn't say the ship had to be used as what it's supposed to be; I just as often use the Medusa(in FS1) like I would the Ares, as a strategic assault fighter. The Athena is as fast as the Apollo, and carries double the missiles(albeit lower compatibility). Only weak point is that it can't use Prometheus, but the Avenger is almost as good anyway. And the Flail is really nice; it's not a fighting gun, it's a tactical gun; you use it to knock fighters off course. And the ML-16 does NO shield damage, so the Flail can't possibly be the worst.
Boct1584: I said that wrong, I meant that because the ML-16 does no shield damage, the Flail can't be the worst. Sorry for the confusion.

The design of the Apollo is absolutely unique and overwhelming.
Yeah, the Apollo looks really cool. It has really nice firepower too. whee!
and how does the ML-16 having NO shield damage make it not the worst? do you see that as a good point? it was made obsolete during gameplay, so it didnt really have the chance.

Please! all of you! when you can use it, the Thoth owns ALL of those! a quad-gun, speed rivaling the Ulysses, Excellent maneuverability, and a double-size missile bank! ONE wing of thoth could probably shred THREE wings of Apollo(4-ship wings) and still have the Hull Integrity and enough missiles to blitz a Demon.

Valkyrie and Ulysses 0WN U. Nuff said. If anyone objects, I shall cast Creeping Doom upon them.
(PH34R that.)
And for those who don't comprehend the meaning of Creeping Doom, here it is, at least in AD&D:
Sphere: Animal, Summoning
Range: 0
Components: V, S
Duration: 4 rds./level
Casting Time: 1 rd.
Area of Effect: Special
Saving Throw: None
When the caster utters the spell of creeping doom, he calls forth a mass of from 500 to 1,000 ([1d6 + 4] x 100) venomous, biting and stinging arachnids, insects, and myriapods. This carpetlike mass swarms in an area 20 feet square. Upon command from the caster, the swarm creeps forth at 10 feet per round toward any prey within 80 yards, moving in the direction in which the caster commands. The creeping doom slays any creature subject to normal attacks, as each of the small horrors inflicts 1 point of damage (each then dies after its attack), so that up to 1,000 points of damage can be inflicted on creatures within the path of the creeping doom. If the creeping doom travels more than 80 yards away from the summoner, it loses 50 of its number for each 10 yards beyond 80 yards. For example, at 100 yards, its number has shrunk by 100. There are a number of ways to thwart or destroy the creatures forming the swarm. The solutions are left to the imaginations of players and DMs.
I rather liked the Herc with 6 Banshees.
Hell on the batteries, tho...

The Thoth is better than the Ulysses, because even though they both have 4 guns, the Thoth has 4/1 and the Ulysses has 2/2, plus the Thoth has double the misssile capacity. I do admit that Herc with 6 Banshee is incredibly powerful, but I only take the quad-mount with Banshee, and I don't link when using Banshee, because it slows the firing rate too much.
