FreeSpace: FS3, Starring: The FDL

Posted by Orange:

There has been a huge movement started lately on the FDL. You'll know what I'm talking about if you're subscribed to the list because your mailbox will most likely have been flooded with e-mails about a project for users to make Freespace 3. I'm really skeptical about this and have no idea why, how, and um.. again, how.. they are going to do this (especially without licensing or anything), but I thought I'd give them a mention. One of the 'leaders' of the project has setup a page covering jobs and news on the project right here. Oh well, when we're not seeing as much Freespace news anymore, it's nice to see things like this pop up every once and a while. Good luck.. (corny-sounding mode) you're going to need it. It's a good idea to a point if you ask me.... The Descent Community is doing something similar, but they're making a bigass MOD using the D3 engine and a helluva lot of levels.

FS3 is a little different in retrospect. Voltion seems DEDICATED in putting out another FS game, it's just several (hundred) years down the road. Also, this group seems to be wanting to make new code entirely and sell it. Buzzz, wrong, try again. You guys are going to get HAMMERED by Interplay if you try to do any hard coding and sell it under the FS license. Heck, even if you just put it up for download you'll be sued up the back-end and down the front.

Making a MOD and a load of levels for FS2 would be one thing. If the source gets released it's an even better thing, but there is no way in heaven or Earth that you're going to be making new code to be sold or downloaded by the open market without facing a lawsuit or buying the license first.

Of course, if you get a load of lawyers and/or money to get the FS license out of Interplay and Volition's hands, more power to you. It'll just be hella difficult.

Just stating the news.. do you guys actually think you can even write a space-combat sim engine that compares to that of the Freespace 2 engine with no funding and not possesing the skills you need? If you do, well.. seek help (not more staff, talking psychiatric here). Besides, on several occasions, Volition staff members have stated that FS3 if they make it, they plan on writing a completely new engine for the game which would blow out your 'engine' and even be better than our beloved Freespace 1/2 engine.

Also you guys, be patient.. it hasn't even been a year since Freespace 2 was released.. remember that Volition started working on FS1 back in about 95 I believe and it was released in 97/98.. Freespace 2 came out in astounding time.. faster than most any game usually does and that was just over a year after FS1 was released. Very impressive. You gamers have just been spoiled by Volition's incredible development speed over any other company.. and you shouldn't be pushing them this much when they already have +50 dedicated staff members working on 2 huge games and possibly a third or fourth that haven't even been announced yet.

Lastly, many people have started huge projects, but noone's ever started one this big. None of those huge projects have nearly been completed to this point, nor do I believe this one will ever be completed by a bunch of people just volunteering their time and resources. You need to take serious development considerations before doing something such as this also. I don't expect to see any of you make your own mission editor either because if you make something with FRED(2) the EULA basically says anything made by you in this program, Volition and Interplay own...

... My 2 cents.

I think Orange and Blue pretty much nailed it. And I don't know who's on it....but seeing as nobody on the VBB has mentioned this....makes you think, doesn't it?

Well.. yeah.. plus if those guys did a real bang up, peice of **** job and called it Freespace 3.. Volition and Interplay would be insulted by their work as using the name even if they could.
