FreeSpace Watch: FreeSpace 2 and Windows XP

Posted by IceFire:

I'd like to start a little dialogue here between our viewers who are considering Windows XP and those with Windows XP via our news page. Undoubtedly, even after a couple of years, many of us are still playing FreeSpace 2 and still enjoying the game. This is definately due in part to the MODs and Campaigns that are extremely prevelant in this community.

We'd like to hear from people out there about their experiences with Windows XP and FreeSpace 2. I've so far heard no problems, but if you've had any, or your impressed with how easy it all was, let us know, drop us a line and tell us how it is.

No problems with WinXP, FS2 installed and worked normally.

same here. I got winxp since it's first beta (when it still was called "Whistler"..), and FS2 always worked fine. More on that: with win98 i wasn't able to play at high resolution. Too slow. But with winxp, i've got no problems at all ms does something good, sometimes...
But, i cannot say the same for FS1... sigh refuses to start. Locates the cd properly (this issue is a problem with other games in xp, due mainly to the fact that winxp doesn't allow to access directly to the hardware... just like NT :P). I didn't try it with the 1.06 patch... maybe I should...

If im not mistaken, can't XP run in a compatability mode for Win95, 98, and so on?

FS2 works fine under WinXP, all of my games works so far. At least with latest patch.

Haven't tried FS1 and can't for some time now, I lent the CD's to my cousin.

XP does have compatibility modes for Win95, 98, NT4 and W2k.

Question I get a weird memory leak

After I exit FreeSapce 2 in XP I run dangerously close to running out of memory. I look in the task manager and I notice Explorer.exe is using 300+ MB of memory. I would have to crash my desktop then start it up again.

The whole proccess starts again when I open and close FreeSpace.

vger, what video card and driver version are you using? That behaviour sounds oddly like the behaviour I was getting with the nVidia 21.81 drivers on my TNT. Upgrading to the 21.85's fixed it but that means jack if you haven't got an nVidia based card.
