OT-Internet/Windows tech help please...

You know when you download a file, lets say a game demo, a prompt comes up asking you to choose whether you want to SAVE it to disc (your hard drive) or OPEN it from the current location. At the bottom, it says something like, "To not ask this again, click this box"

Well, I clicked the box when I was closing all these DAMNED pop-ups, and now everything is opened and not saved to anywhere but a temp folder that is deleted every day. PLEASE, HOW do I get that prompt back!? I save everything to specific folders and stuff, and I REALLY dont know what to do.

I know its in the regedit---I have to edit the register stuff or something; WAY beyond my knowledge. Please, anyone, help.

My only advice is to use something like [url=http://www.getright.com]Getright[/url] or some other download manager until you figure this out. Other than that, not much I know to do.

I can't remember how to get it back, but in the meantime you
could right click on whatever it is you want to download and
click on "save target as..." which should let you save it in any
folder you want.
If I remember how to get it back I'll let you know.

Damn! I've got a virus... It makes .eml files all around my hd and the irony is... The names are "alien-narn.eml", "alien-minbari.eml", etc...

You could maybe try this but you would have to do it for each
type of file (.exe .avi .jpg etc). This is from the microsoft
knowledge base at:

RESOLUTION
If you want to be prompted for a download location for the file type, follow these steps:

Double-click My Computer.

On the View menu, click Folder Options.

On the File Types tab, click the appropriate file type in the Registered File Types box.

Click Edit.

Click to select the Confirm Open After Download check box.

Click OK, and then click OK.

Ok, you might not like this but it should work. Open the Internet Explorer options box and select the advanced tab. Then push the button marked "Restore Defaults". If this doesn't work switch to the programs tab and push the button marked "Reset Web Settings". If this doesn't work, as a last resort, you might want to try changing your security setting to high and then back to whatever you normally use.

Ah, the dreaded download box

as stated before, the easiest, ABSOLUTE simplest way to do it, just go click restore defaults

Or if you wana get all advanced and technical you can always go into ms dos mode and type scanreg -restore then select a date prior to your screw up

OR you could just format entirely. All are very feasable ;P

Also a note: For popups -

Tools > Internet Options > Security > Custom Level > Disable Java script

Will prevent those bastids from appearing
