What type of FPS style do you prefer?

Well seeing that this forum here is dead and we're still in the early design stage for this project, what's your favorite FPS style?

Creepy environment based shooters like System Shock or AVP?

Single man frag fests like Quake II and Red Faction?

Team based like some missions of C&C Renegade and the training missions of Tribes 2?

Or "First Person Puzzle" like some parts of Half-Life?

team based definitively. Renegade as such a great ambience because of that, it just had so much depth to the gameplay, it's cool
But actually I like them all about the same (my favourite FPS are at the same level, now, C&C Renegade and, still, Thief The Dark Project )

First Person Puzzle?

I think that "first person mystical puzzle" is preferable in the world of Freespace. There are many elements that can interact with the player, that can make people wonder, like -

(hmm, strange event I wonder if this have anything to do with that incident in the Ribos system)

I think that puzzle games catch the eye, from a other angle.
But there must be action in the game as well. The art of making a game, is finding that balance between the elements in the world of the game.

(I am of course here?)

Ribos is bad. You don't want to be in Ribos.

But Beta Cygni is worse. You really don't want to be in Beta Cygni.

There should be a balance, but the game should be mostly tactical, broken up with th odd atmospheric part and quite a lot of blast-fests. Make sure the player gets lots of big guns during the blast fests, maybe even commandeering a gun turret.

Tactical. All I've been playing recently are team games (Counter-Strike, Day of Defeat, Firearms, C&C Renegade multi demo)

AvP!
But I put my vote in team. I want some kind of mix between AvP and Counter-Strike..

By the way, I discourage the use of puzzle elements. First person shooters are not suited to that kind of thing. Maybe the odd bit of killing a boss by shooting something above it to make it fall down and squash it, but nothing complicated like you would get in an RPG.

eeew... puzzles.

im thinking we should have some interaction with NPCs for things like opening security doors, issuing commands, etc...

I knew you'd say that. If FSFPS has Jedi-Knight-Esque jump puzzles, I will kick you in the nuts.

YES WE MUST HAVE A ROOM 900 METERS TALL WITH A MASSIVE COMPLEX THAT YOU JUMP BETWEEN PLATFORMS TO INPUT A SINGLE CODE TO CALL FOR ROGUE SQUA... THE GTD GALATEA YES.

Yeah that part was soo NOT fun. What a big waste of space inside that ship.

hey, it was just an excuse to give you Level 3 Force Jump... plus it wasn't hard at all if you used the third-person view and held E when landing...

and personally, I think the game should be based on the gameplay dynamics of NoLF, where its totally stealth, but you can easily go nuclear on the bad guys if you want/can...

although it should shift to AvP style when it comes to running down blacked out corridors with only a rifle and a motion detector (you NEED one of those... somehow) for company...

try and throw in some AI scripting too, just to make it more realistic...

Hey Griffon, you mentioned that you have some music that would be available for BWO and my campaign.

Well for my campaign I got a very talented guy doing up a few tracks already, but if the guy who did your music (or if it was you) has the time to do some tracks for FS:FPS, contact me or Plasma.

With Horror in mind, do you think Shivans are strong enough to break through walls? You could be running and they smash open the floor in front of you, you fall down and your in deep trouble.

Duh, they smash through walls, walk on 'em, throw crates, and tear people open like sardine cans

I prefer a good mix of all of 'em.

My personal belief is that teh Freespace FPS would be best as a combination Frag Fest/Team Based, with some Environmental/Puzzles thrown in there for good measure.

Kind of like Freespace meets Tribes 2 (on a smaller scale) meets Half-Life meets Serious Sam.

Freespace for..well..the premise of the game, Tribes 2 for the team-based combat (although some better AI would be good. ), Half-Life for the ambience, puzzle, and general kick-ass FEELING of the game, and Serious Sam for the uber-action.

I, personally, would be hooked.

But that's just me..
