It can be done. Use VPView to extract spherec.pof, or whatever, change the map to a planet and viola!

Planet backrounds...

It came just to my mind...

...the subspace backround in FS-missions is a POF-Model, right?!?!...as well as the nebulars of FreeSpace 1!! Is it possible to create such a backround, that shows a real 3D-planet?
Well...we could never reach it...but i think it would be a fantastic image...

Actually, I've done some experiments with the background .pof files, and they're quite impressive.

So... there are SUPAR SECRETS! abound...
