Derelict leftovers

Ok, I just finished playing Derelict. Again. Anyways, it left me with two main questions:
1) What happened to the MTD Auriga in the end?
2) In one of the Command Briefings before the point when the GTVX Gorgon is revealed, there is a reference to a "photon cannon" - WTH?

I don't really expect answers to these questions, but will they be answered in BWO?

1) I don't know, it may just be another one of those mysteries.
2) The very first mission of FreeSpace 2 calls beam cannons photon beam cannons (ie. beams of light). The Gorgon is the prototype of the much larger version mounted on the Golgotha.

That means it can take down a ravana in 1 shot.... holy crap!

Ok, but is the issue addressed in BWO?

No that particular issue is not addressed in BWO. We've got far too much going on to add another subplot.

Yes, the Golgotha can destroy a Ravana in one clean shot. It can also wipe out a Sathanas in three. On standard power. If you really needed to get rid of a Sathanas quickly, full power is possible too.

But that would take months of repairs afterwards.

That is classified level Omega. You are to refrain from further discussion of this topic, or face up to 3 year in the Vega Penal Colony.

Sorry, it was a photon artillery, not a cannon. Does that make any difference, or is it a reference to the Grogon?

Same difference.

The Gorgon is more artillery like because its pretty much an immobile structure. At least in tactical terms.

The Golgotha is a full blown destroyer with more speed and manuverability than previous generation destroyers.

Posted by Kellan on 05-25-2001 03:32 PM:

Actually... correction time...

It's a little-known fact to anyone else but Agatheron and I, but the photon artillery was a long-range and high-velocity weapon - like a photon torpedo but cooler, obviously - that we made and were toying with using for some time. In the end the Gorgon replaced it. And the Gorgon was a fluke - I was sticking ships together and it just became that, really. Lucky.

And it made an excellent unintentional predecessor to the Golgotha. I assure you that the Golgotha won't explode quite as readily as its prototype, however...

Ah, the photon artillery. We set it to fire at fighters and bombers once (due to speed and power it was capships only) - and you should have seen the golden bolts rip right through bombers. Aaahhh...

Posted by Kellan on 05-25-2001 03:34 PM:

As regards the Auriga, the mystery certainly isn't answered this time around in BWO. However...it may be in the future. I don't know - time shall tell, and I need to think of a fitting end to such a tale.

Glad you liked Derelict enough to play it through more than once sandwich! It's a fair old slog...did you catch some of the foreshadowing of future events the second time around? Now THAT is something that only Agatheron knows about in its entirety...

Hmmm... do you mean future events that will occur in BWO? Things that us poor souls have been able/allowed to discover about the campaign?

If so, I saw stuff with that Knossos portal being brought in-system and the like to refer to the increasing possibility of building a portal to Sol... hmmm... what else?

No...Kellan means forshadowing in Derelict. There is quite a bit of it and its fantastic when you know the outcome to see and understand the forshadowing.

We hope to achieve a similar level with BWO. But its an entirely different beast so it'll have to be done differently.
