What do I need for making my own ships?

I'm interested in making my own ship models etc. What tools do I need?

No, I don't think it's a simple thing. But practise makes a master. (I hope)

Truspace 3+ - modeling + texturing ability
POF Constructor Suite
Knowledge of the modeling Hierarchy and game limitations
knowledge of the ships.tbl format

There must be guides for this? If so, please post some links or anything related to the topic.

There are some simple moding tutorials on freespacewatch and ipandrews has a more comlex one on his homepage, can't remember the link though.
