Question OT - A question on background

Which races use artificial gravity?

I know the Minbari do, and that humans don't - hence rotating sections etc.

The Centauri must - London is standing comfortably when watching the bombardment of Narn.

The Raider Battlewagon must - Lord Jiro and the Raiders were standing too.

I'd guess that the Vree have this technology (no obvious engines similar to Minbari)

This probably holds true for some others, but who?

Interestingly it looks as if some Vorlon ships still use reaction-based drives...

The Raider ship in Signs and Portents had a rotating section. (The part where the fighters were docked to.) It was a pretty crude ship, not much more than a jump engine with something extra strapped to it.

Races which had artificial gravity tech before ISA:

And true, Raider carrier had a rotating section. Battlewagon probably does not have gravity at all.

Humans were given AG at the end of series 4. I`m not certain if the warlock uses it (probably not since the ship must have been planned before Clarke's downfall) but later human ships probably do.

IIRC, Warlocks were designed with a primitive EA microgravity environment. Following the formation of the ISA, they were retrofitted with Minbari gravitational fields.

That would be quite a retrofit... since artificial gravity is a byproduct of a gravitational drive system (remember Delenn explaining this and other things about the White Star?). Changing a warship's drive system sounds like a pretty big job, it might be cheaper to just build new ones and leave old models as they were! (but who knows, not me ) I'm not arguing, but I don't think I'll take that for granted without further references. Sure, I'd like to think Warlocks have artificial gravity. I'm sure later models do, but not the early models even after getting the tech, and not until the technology has been learned and properly adopted.

While Clark was around the Warlocks were still under development. I don't think they got any of them finished before Earth joined ISA. When they got AG it was pretty easy to implement the tech to Warlocks I imagine.

Ivanova transfered to a Warlock almost immediately after Clarke's defeat so they must have been finished either before or very shortly after Clarke's death.
I`d imagine it would take weeks or more likely months to refit a ship to have AG so the question must be how badly did the EA want it? Most likely they would have sent the completed Warlocks out immediately while altering the ones that were incomplete (remember that the EA had lost a few ships in the civil war and would have wanted replacements out there quickly).

Battlewagon

I guess they must stop the rotaion to launch - Else the Zephyrs would launch directly away fro the battlewagon's axis, rather than forward as they do.

B5 of course give its Starfuries a hand by letting them launch with its spin.

Hmmm - B5 tech gets hairy when you get too close!

That would be quite costly, energy wise, to stop the section rotating to launch fighter, and then start it up again. It would also play havoc with the crew. While the bridge crew could be strapped down (much like on the Hyperion et al class ships), this would be impractical for crew who normal job would involve them moving about the ship.

The launch racks (or whatever hold the fighters to the battle wagon) could launch the fighters forwards and sideways in the opposite direction to the spin of the vessel. Provide this sideways force it equal (but inverse!) to that of the rotating section, the fighter would just shoot forward out of the rack.

Of course how they get them back onto the racks is another matter.

I have been wondering that for a long time...
