Summoner 2: What do you like and dislike so far?

Likes:

- The petitions and options to improve the kingdom. I know they're kind of minor side quests, but I really liked this part and making the decisions. I don't remember anything being done like this in any game I have played before. It's fun! Someone should make a ruler/kingdom sim game.

- The characters. They're all pretty interesting, colorful, diverse and all have their own motives. The voice acting is good too.

- The mythology. It's interesting to see a mythology that takes a portion of that of the first game and completely turns it on its head.

- The locals, especially the large sweeping cities.

- Lots and lots and lots of side quests and puzzles

What I think could be better:

- The AI, while it's a huge improvement over the first game, it still needs some work. I often find myself yelling at the TV "Hello people I'm dying over here!" lol I'm not sure the AI will ever be able to be perfect but maybe they could keep working on it for future games?

- The game is rather difficult. I know this is terribly subjective, and I am primarly an RPG player and not an action game player, but sometimes this game frustrates the heck out of me. Also, when you're going to get stuck playing a character who really cannot heal themselves it might be nice to have them say something like "Perhaps we should stock up heal potions first before we do this" or something like that.

What does everyone else think in terms of likes, dislikes, etc.

I think I've got to agree with you on everything here. The whole running the kingdom thing is especially cool, lets you give the character some personality based on what you want, instead of purely 100% scripted stuff.. plus I imagine the game is going to vary somewhere depending on what you choose to do/say.

The battle is also a nice touch. I'm sure there are people that will say it's getting too "actiony" if that's a word, but I like it. It makes it so that there's more to a battle than just being high enough level and if you can't win, go level up and come back.

So far, my only thing would be even better cameras. Camera control is definitely an improvement from s1, but I'd like to be able to rotate farther overhead, etc... sorta a full sphere of camera rotation.

Also, multiplayer would be nice, ala legend of alon d'ar. Player one controls the first character, player 2 controls the 2nd if they want to (or player 1 does otherwise), player 1 controls the 3rd, etc. **sits back and waits to see this in s3**

Hey dudes, I'm glad I have found this forum for what appears to be a fantastic RPG, yes the long awaited Summoner2. I have to agree with the functions as Queen, and a Kingly sim would be cool(Kingly?). I also have to agree that the boss battles are tough but hey, I think it forces you to think and utilize party specifics to get the job done. I enjoyed the NPC interaction in the first installment, I sure hope Summoner 2 has the same. Well hope to discuss things more, now I need to find a help thread.

this game was tight i beat it in four days though so it was kind of short and the only reason i did that is because i rented it. i thought it was a lot shorter than the orginal and it was also better for some unknown reason.

I have come up with 1 complaint... the cities. The cities don't feel like anyone actually lives in them. I was looking forward to more large (for a video game, anyway) cities like Lenelle, with obvious living quarters, both rich and poor, market districts, etc. So far these are your average video game towns... lots of people work there, but where does everyone live?

Maybe they commmunite to work! lol

Munari city is huge! There are a few homes, the oligarchs, complete with beds and such. The other areas are markets, the university, arena, harbor etc. and we're told the nobles live below the water where no outsiders are allowed. As for the other city, well it's a bit unusal so that's why there are no homes. The first game only really had one city of any decent size and that was Lenelle. There were houses but the vast majority you could not go into.

Okay.. Here's what I like.

--Combat: It took a little getting used to but once I got intot he combat system, I actually like it better then S1. It's really fun to wack things but sometimes my companions get in the way.. ugh.

--Item/Spell/Quest Menu: This is really nice. Makes it easy to use things like potions and such. Very nice.

--Load times: THANK GOD they fixed this. It's so nice the load times are down a LOT.

--World Design: The world design is nice for the most part.. some of it is odd but a lot of it is really nice.

--Summons: Well I like the Blood Summon. And the fact that death of a summoned creature doesn't hurt you anymore. This was a pain in the old game.

What I don't Like:

--MiniGames: I don't like all the constant mini-games. these things are annoying. Tons and tons of mini-games are just annoying. Feels more and more like Final Fantasy.

--Mythology: To be honest, the old myths where nice and very western if you ask me. I liked it. The new Myths start off fine, but suddenly as I play the game more, they keep changeing and mixing about to the point now I'm not sure what the heck is going on. You run into more Gods then I can shake a stick at in this game. I think it's ready to call Maia the "God killer" To some degree this is cool, but in another angle, it's kind of 'odd for the sake of odd' and just doesn't seem very fitting.

--Monster Games?: Are we trying to get into the Pokemon theme too? More and more I play this game I feel like It got a very strong influence from Final Fantasy or other Japanese games. Not that it's wrong but I think it takes away from the uniqueness of the game and makes it seem like a copy cat game.

--More Spell Detail: The game lacks detail on the strength and operation of some spells. Right now I leave most spells on auto-control with the AI controled players. FOr myself I feel spells are just not worth casting or I'll get interupted too often.

Over all I'm loveing the game, but the key problem I have is the Copy Cat Final fantasy elements like the mini-games, the monster game, etc. But That's just my opinion. It's fun otherwise.

I didn't mind some of the mini-games so much. The Sangaril solo portions I think borrowed from Summoner 1 and a little from Metal Gear if anything more than FF. And the petitions I thought were unique.

As for the mythology, I liked it, and it does make sense in a way. I takes things to a different level and breaks the myths for what they are, myths. But at one point Maia is told when questioning the the myths aren't real that people need the myths. I think this is true. Humans always need some form of myths that's why we have so many. I like that the game didn't feel constrained to follow the mythology to a T from the first game but instead branched out. I the end this game's mythology is far less complex and just simple dualism.

Well that's just my $.02

Well I like mythology in games to be sort of a 'the myths and gods exist and do what they do, as been 'told' to humans and never changes'. The idea is that the gods are always doing the same things over and over.. teaching the same lessons. Living there lives over and over. The goddess of summer is chased away by old man winter, who then finaly gives in to her tears and slips away for now. The sun rises and sets because they are chased by wolves that hunt them for all time. Men grow old because there god betrayed the great maker and he started the something new that was called 'time'.

Those things. Not this 'well actually your old 'gods' where just another race with some advanced meta-technology' crud. It just demistifys the world. Sort of makes it just plain. Everything is still mortal and real. It's just diffrent people where involved and people made up myths from there stories. Ya I guess that's cool. But I rather the myths be a reflection of what humans have percieved as reality. To me, The change in mythology doesn't make as much more sence anymore from what I remember in Summoner 2. So the Tower was the tree? And then who was the great creator? Why did Urath and Laharra fight? What did happen then. It was much cooler when it was a bit mroe clear cut. Since in that case, From what I expected, the gods where ment to be just figureheads that teach people who they should act in society. Just like how real religion is used today.. I think.

Summoner 2 has so far just said "oh well really, those gods where just people with high tech that made them like a god, and they lived in some funky unfinished universes.. Which could have been cooler except it's just not. The game is still fun to play, but the Mythology just seems to burn me.

Just my other two cents.

I'm getting sick of trying to cast a spell and they come up and hit me. But I had that same prob. in Summoner 1. But i guess that puts some challenge into the game.

I think I agree pretty much with everything that was said, but as for me I have to say one of my favorite parts of the game was when Maia got those Twilight leggings. Yeah I know it's just graphics and pixels, but come on, she was hot!

Okay, I'm going to start generating a list of fantasy gameing dos and don'ts soon on another thread. I'm not done with the game yet, but I've gone thru and done quite a few of the side-quests and I'm fairly sure I'm about ready to take on the final level. I may want to do that first before anything but I'm going to say this now before I start this.

The game is fun, but the story does not interest me as much as the original game did. I also strongly believe Volition changed the story at some point late in the game. Because unless they realized they made a err the original character (Pava?) could not have fit into the story like Maia does now. Something changed and the first don't I'm going to say now.

Don't go with your second story, stick to the original. Most often, the first story is the best. The second is just a conservative remake that contains re-hashed storylines and cliches that don't do justice to the first story.

Overall, I'm haveing fun, and I like the action. It's a fun game, just not a great story. I think I like the action and adventure elements more then the story. Oh well.

Maybe I'm picky, or my ambitions where too high. I just think I'm disapointed with where they went with the story. I was hopeing they would go in a somewhat opposite direction in the end, but alas, not.

No way around it other then paying for it. This was one of the things that's in my 'do's and dont's' post. No stupid mini-games. Games like this are just not fun.
