Anyone Remember Elite?

Does anyone remember the old game Elite? That would be such a great format to have a Babylon 5 game set in, assuming they added more interactive elements. Maybe a sim-based mmorpg with various groups including raider factions, Earth Force squadrons, and squadrons from other races taking place during the height of conflict in the Shadow induced border wars.

that would be sweet

I really ought to finish that mod. UV mapping the ships was the pain. It always takes a long time regardless of ship complexity. I've got UVMapper and LithUnwrapper now though. They'd eat Elite ships for breakfast. Leaving the only problem as Elite's heavy use of beam lasers instead of pulse lasers.

Ahh, that brings back memories (wireframe models on the BBC) - what a great game for the time. Into the Fire was originally planning on doing just this kind of universe and was the main reason it would have stood out as a game. I would love to see a new game in any universe develop a good game in this style.

If Elite was to be the basis of a B5 game then you can imagine the fun you would have docking with B5 and its rotating bay (just like the green bases in Elite).

I like Elite, only ever played the BBC and Arc verisons. Could never dock, so I kinda cheated and got the added the docking computer at the start.

For some reason the docking computer took to long for me, so I never used it. For me it was just easier to dock manually.

What was really funny, was watching the docking computer spend a great deal of time intricately and precisely aligning and matching rotation with the station. Before ploughing happily into the back the station. Opposite side to where the docking bay is.

My favorite hobby was just taking on the stations' defending police ships. It would be neat to be a trader coming to B5, start taking some potshots at C&C, and have a wing of Starfuries launched out after me.

Those Vipers were no match for my Cobra, armed with its military laser and heat-seeking missiles

Never had that problem on the original BBC version. As soon as you hit the key to dock you were in. No wait while you watched it ATTEMPT to dock, just a loud grinding noise and you were in. Much better

Posted by Triggy on 01-21-2002 05:05 PM:

That's because you had it set to auto-dock, which you could turn off to allow the computer to show you docking (including any misfortunes en route).

I liked it when you double jumped and you ended up with 4 groups of Thargoids after you. The money you could make from selling those Thargons was great. That is IF you could get back anywhere. Nornally you didn't have enough fuel to get back anywhere to sell them.

[EDIT] And like Triggy's about to say, when you double jump there is no sun to collect fuel from. You are out in the middle of nowhere.

Posted by Triggy on 01-21-2002 05:09 PM:

The best bit for me was bounty hunting and picking up their dropped cargo. Just imagine your surprise when you realise that you have picked up slaves in a Democracy system and the Vipers come after you. You can't jump 'cause you're low on fuel and your status changes to fugitive. You then have to fly to the sun for fuel, dodging police and other bounty hunters and finally jump away to a system that is more like Feudal.

I have 2 versions of the BBC game. One is on a tape and is a rather limited version. It doesn't include half the ships or the military lasers. That is the one I have most experience with and I don't believe you can watch it dock on that version.
The other version is on a disk and is for the BBC master. That has everything but I haven't yet played it much to find out the differences. Maybe I will now.

Get an emulator, then you can play it on the comfort of your PC

Do you know of any good ones?
My previous experience with emulators on my machine is rather poor. Everything runs too fast. I have an Athlon XP 1600+ and it's impossable to do anything.

Posted by IceFire on 01-21-2002 05:50 PM:

The emulator should be able to slow it down to a good speed.

There are also slow-down programs, like slomo or something ... try google, you'll find quite a few.
zophar.net is everything related to emulation, they probably have what you need, too...

Thanks guys. Yep, that site had all I needed to get going. I'm sure I'll be occupied for quite a while playing my old BBC games.

Lets see: Elite, Frak, Swag, JetPack, Lode Runner, Jet Set Willy, Dare Devil Denis ...

Posted by Triggy on 01-22-2002 06:14 PM:

One quick question, I've been looking for the game "Painter" and not "Crazy Painter" for the BBC for a while now. If someone finds it for an emulator could they please let me know.
