FRED2: your max ships

I crash after adding 130 Aurora fighters in FRED2. What about you?

If I have 125 lets say, will game fun decent?

If I allocate additional system resources to Fred 2 I can place about 900 ships before it crashes. I have 600+ megs of RAM though.

I have precisely 100 ships before Fred2 won't let me place any more ships (but it doesn't crash) with 128 MB RAM.

lol, I only have 64 megs of RAM, maybe that's why FRED 2 crashes when I add the 50th ship. I really need to upgrade, how much do upgrades usually cost? Be nice to have 400 ships, even though the mission would look like a slide show, lol

Posted by ivanenski on 10-22-2001 11:50 PM:

oh, and how do you allocate additional system resources to FRED 2? That might help too seeing as I don't have the funds to upgrade at this time.

Hey, ivan, over here in the states a 128mb dimm would cost you a mere $20 Pentium !!!s for less than $150, and a mobo to run it for around $100.

RAM is cheap. Buy RAM. I don't know about other operating systems but under Whistler (Windows XP) right click on the program and go to >properties >advanced.

AI instances really determine max ships

In general, I guess its defined by RAM. Interesting.

I'm pretty sure its RAM. When I had 64 RAM I could place only about 50 ships before crashing, now I have 512 megs and I once put over 200 ships in one mission.

Posted by LAM3O on 10-23-2001 04:51 AM:

I have 320 megs, but my puter always has tons of programs open, i figure 50 ships is enough in most cases.

Posted by Fuzzy Modem on 10-23-2001 06:28 AM:

I just tried it out on a friends computer. He's got 2+ gigs of RAM and we placed 2,700+ Sathanas before loosing count and intrest.
He said h'ed write a script to place 10 ships a second untill Fred2 crashes but he probably won't. He's got a big Japanese test tommarro.

Have in mind though...

Over 900 ships in a mission and you find out that some order/event is not working properly... you start checking out every ship... every event... etc. etc. *whew*

But anyway I have 512 MB Ram and I have gotten over a thousand ships placed on FRED 2 and then I lost my interest...

2700+ Sathanas placed in one mission... uhhhhh... that would be a sight, and 0.0001 FPS during the play...

WEBSITE NOW UP AND RUNNING!!!!!

Posted by CptWhite on 10-23-2001 03:44 PM:

what i am interested in is whether a mssion with 100 ships can run on a PC with only 64Mb ram (ie someoen with more ram created the mission, now there something you guys can test for us)

and btw you could probably get about 1500 sathanas' with a decent frame rate, if they were a square (6 poly each) and the size of a fighter

Try downloading my mission Breakthrough - it has seven capital ships and 72 fighters, with potentially 54 coming back as reserves. Let us know whether your system can handle it.
