Big Battles
For big battles wouldn't it be a good idea to have a background effect which will show a lot of ships, like at the battle of endor on X-Wing Alliance.
Maybe its just me, but I think that it might look very amatuer if we did it, maybe I'm just not understanding you properly. But a stationary image or looping image, is just going to look out of place. I'm sure the more technical people will hop in on this though =)

It is doable but I don't know if it looks good after all. Migh be good idea for legendary B5 battle situations like Coriana 6 battle when there was one or two Vorlon Planetkillers and perhaps also Shadow Planetkillers.
It would fit perfectly in those really (and I mean really) big battles. Like battle of Endor or Coriana 6. When player has so much to do that he hasn't go the time to see them clearly...
Its possible......but it would cut into the backgrounds effects which i am a bit wary of doing...i like how it is........
i dont think were gonna need this
i had 70 fighters and about 15 capitals in the game and it ran ok...thats a big battle...true me !

Really far off in the distance worked well with the Sathans fleet in FS2. So I can see how the planet killer thing would work, but I doubt that we'd do anything aside from that.
FS2 does let us have fairly large battles (50 or so ships - which is really alot when you think about it).
What kinds of video cards does everyone here use? I know that Freespace 2 seems to run fairly well at high details on a TNT, but I haven't hit any massive fleet battles yet.
If the Models had Lod 4 then there would be no probs, which Iam sure they will. Or you could just make a set of mini caps with real low poly counts. Just my 2 cents
Keep up the good work

Well I used to have Voodoo 2 12MB and FS2 was quite slow in biggest missions.
Now I am using GF2 MX and FS2 runs smoothly.
hehehe got the confirmation MY new PC is comming next tuesday...
muhahahahahaah
T-bid 1200 256MB ram G-force2GTS heheh eat your hart out FURY
just joking I HAD to tell it to the 4 winds!!!
I would recommend rather to buy GF2 Pro or Ultra, they are soon in lower prices.
Nah buy GeForce 3. And 512 megs is even better, oh and of course it must be DDR memory.
And of course ATA-100 and 10000 rpm 80 Gb HD.
No, two of them.

C'mon now haderak!
Shame on you!

Oh and Mr.Fury double that RAM and I'll be happy
The final mission of FS2 had the most ships not only in the mission but on screen at once I believe. Would our framerate in that mission be a good or semi-accurate indication of what we'll see in the bigger battles in B5?
Yes and no. We'll see what we can do...but I suppose that Severed Dreams will be fairly large with a trio of fighter wings on each side and 7 capital ships in space at the same time. Things will get interesting.
GeForce 2 GTS
But my old Cel466 is a real bottleneck, preventing me from getting optimal performance.
I get some odd slowdowns with my GeForce 2 GTS. Its like it drops a frame and then catches it later.
Really odd. Any idea why? (latest drivers for everything).
I had a quick question about weapons. Are interceptors (the kind that are fired from defense grids) only effective against pulse weapons? They don't seem like they would do much against a beam weapon since you would have to have a constant stream of them to counter the beam.
Did you see pulse cannons shooting down other pulse cannons in FS2? No.
We can't do that.
Wasn't really asking if you could do it, more like is it supposed to be able to work according to B5. (using interceptors to stop a beam weapon that is)
