Collision Detection

Perhaps this has been mentioned before but I've not been online recently so forgive my ignorance.

I've been creating a few missions of my own (as you do) and in one, a Nova dreadnaught is blocking the path of a Hyperion. Now, normal practice would be for the Hyperion to either go around the Nova or nudge it our of the way. Imagine my surprise when it decided to travel THROUGH it.

Has this just happened to me?

oh no, it happened with a sharlin and hyperion to me too...

I guess our ships are happy to ramm

and when 2 hyperions were firing at surrounding nial fighters, they were hitting each other most of the time too!

Im guessing its a glitch with the FS2 engine

I think his point was, that the ships simply fly throught each other without stopping, this happens to me too.

Posted by Boron Shark on 01-16-2002 02:53 PM:

The "ramming" happened with the original FS2 ships also. Usually, they just pushed one another our of the way. As Pera mentioned, the Hyperion drifted through the Nova as if it were not there.

Now I'm all in favour of storyline variety, but one involving a phantom Nova dreadnaught is far fetched for even the B5 universe (did I actually just say that?)!

The last time I played (standard) FS2, in the mission whewre the Orion rams Collossus, it traveled a significant way throiugh the Collossus' hull before finallt exploding.

So it's not just the mod.

Apparently collission detection isn't perfect. But thats an engine issue rather than a MOD one.

Bad collision detection is one thing, but it sounds like the ships deliberately went through one another. Those navigators must have the IQs of dandelions...

Wait, I know what happened.....

Pilot of Nova; Sir We're about to be Rammed.
Captain og Nova; engage phantom Drive!!!!

You didn't want to Hyperion ramm to Nova, right?

Easy way to stop it make a extra waypoint above(or below) Nova or its waypoint. In that way Hyperion should go around of Nova.
I have noticed that "phantom" thing also. I was really suprised when Deimos went trough Hatseheptup.

you think thats odd, in one of my regular FS2 missions, a ravana dug its "claws" right into an Orion, head to head and kept firing the whole time.

I don't know..... I've seen some massively weird stuff. Like a nova firing throuh itself to hit it's target, phantom beam weapons which pass through a target without so much as scratching the paint job.......

Whee!

I have seen really weard thing in one of my TBP mission. Sharlin firing trough of a other Sharlin in order to hit in Hyperion and odd thing was that other Sharlin weren't event hurt by that, but Hyperion were valporized. But unfortunantly this happend only once.

I think FS2 has quite a few "cheats" in it with regards colission detection and so on; but as these make the game run faster it's not too bad a problem..

The main thing that's been noticed here is that capship collisions are not checked for by the game, or at least not at full detail.
(ie fighters and weapons are the only things checked to see if they collide with anything.)

The "beam passing through other ship" is a related problem - apart from the target ship, only fighters appear to be being checked to see if they're colliding with a beam. Indeed, beam turrets can fire through the ship that's firing them as well.
The turrets will not fire if they don't have line of sight though, so this glitch will be very rare.

Weirdest things that happen to me is that an elysium turns around, and docks backwords, so that it went into the ship. Same thing happend with a fenris trying to dock with an arcadia. I don't think this happened in fs1, but correct me if I'm wrong.
