The completed ring station (PICS)

Well ive finally finished it ! Lets the party commence, this was one git to texture , not least for the amount of seperate UV alignments i had to do.

Anyway i thought i'd present to you a render of each lod (barring lod3 which is also done, but lod3 usings green which is translusent in freespace 2 but doesnt give a good render

The rendors of lod 1 and 2 lose some of the detail in the textures...i dont know why...thats truespace's fault So the textures are actually crisper but with a render you get nice material properties whcih wont be in game, like the shine effects

LOD 0

LOD 1

LOD 2

DEBRIS

AND IT WILL BE IN THE FIRST RELEASE....WOOHOO !

Awesome job. I love all those little lights littered around on the textures.

I kinda dislike those lods 1 and 2, but love the Ring Station at close... But anyway it will be a close flying until the thing blows... Or will it be? BTW... How far do you have to be for that thing to turn into that lod1 or 2?

The whole point with LODs is that you probably won't even notice. You never did with FS2 probably (unless you were running low detail) and FS2's LODs are less detailed than ours are probably.

LOD1 will probably be switched to at something like 3000-4000 meters.

Oh, then it won't be a problem... I just hate the when the stations or ships change rapidly to a better or worse looking... Like in some of the mods in HomeWorld...

Good lodding is done though understanding of the modeller and texturer. The lodding on the sharlin is simply second to none at a fair distance even lod 2 looks good on the sharlin

lod 3 is also good.

the lodding change is more noticeable on the ring station, but this is due the model, tomcat did a fantastic job in reducing the model for the lods, but sacrifices have to be made and its not as easy model to lod at the sharlin is. my textures have done there best, i feel its the model thats lets the lodding down a bit, not that its tomcats fault, its just a difficult model.

the lodding on it is still very good , its just the lodding on the sharlin is unbelieveable. if you play with 3 stars then you ntice some lodding change but 4 stars or more and you notice very little lod change at all.

apparently the first release hyperion and EA freighter wont be lodded but then ive been playing with unlodded aurora's too and the game runs fine. Unless your running the game with something less than a TNT or voodoo 3 you wont have any compaints, and even then id imagine it wouldnt be that bad.

like weve always said we dont just want it to look good, we want it to give acceptable performance too, and this is what it now gives

jeez that was a big waffle about nothing

The main detail on the ring station is... well... the ring. Cylindrical stuff is hard to model. Especially at lower levels of detail. Which I think is basically what Cpt White just said.

The way I've got it setup now in the tables, you probably won't notice at all.

I think it looks great

One Q, though - how did you poly reduce the LODs & make the debris? Seperate models, or some sort of 3d program fangdoogly?

(This being my one major bugbear )

Each subsection has an isothermal neutronic accumulator core that when phase switched in the event of an emergency causes unstable neutrino fluxes in the range of six megaklods to move to high order molecular shunts - oh wait, this isn't Star Trek. Backup batteries, then.

Smile :) Nice Texture CPt White

Good Job Cpt White I like them....look generic enough to be a EA station...Is functionality written all over

One thing the Fury hangar is the smaller one in the rotation part..the big one is for big ships
