Post X-Ray Laser <--Get it here.

Well I said id upload it.. here it be

I appreciate the work the team has done.. however being the assertive type I'm not going to wait severail months for another release.. so.. .. I share my meager "improvement" with you all now.

Get it here at : http://home.earthlink.net/~javisjshelmar/XLaserpatch.zip

I suggest right clicking and Save as..

What it does? it gives one exstra weapon for use on any ship... If you know how to use Winzip you can install it fine.

Just unzip to the paths defined and walla its in the game to use.

Make missons go nuts have a ball!

I included a misson.. no real objective but to ..stay alive and watch the fun.

Hey Ashrak, I agree in a way - if the Midwinter class is used instead of Hyperion then missions will start to be unbalanced. New missions using the mod though should be feasible.

BTW the power of the beam on the Nova and Midwinter is very different though. On the Midwinter it is basically the same as on the Omega but on the Nova as there are 22?!? the power was lower so that several could still fire at once.

Takes 5 secs to edit a tbl file... I would encourage those of you who dont want to wait to play around with the thing and MAKE it good, to your own tastes.

Hehe, I dont think that ALL of novas turrets are fitted with beams, maybe the forward ones but not all, that would be just insane.

Posted by Triggy on 10-26-2001 02:40 PM:

Supposedly after/during the war all of hte turrets were retofitted with duel pulse-laser turrets but only of medium power (first occured in 2242). Later the Midwinter class was created (2246) and older Hyperions were retrofitted with heavy X-ray xaser (for want of a better word) cannons but this only really occured after the war.

As for modding the game to include them now, I think the idea is good and would only take a little time editing the game files. Time to come up with some missions for it too. Perhaps someone could make a mission where the new upgraded Nova is about to be tested and the Minbari learn of the prototype so they come ot destroy it. EA has to delay the Minbari forces long enough to either smuggle th Nova away or to fully power up the new weapons systems.

I've been looking through my sources of information and the degree of retrofitting of Novas was never consistent. Some would have been entirely retrofitted if necessary but the majority were probably either not upgraded at all or were only partially upgraded (let's face it not all of the weapons could fire simultaneously anyway).

jsut curious everyone says they couldn't fire at the same time but where does it state this that is canon????? even b5tech doesn't claim they couldn't fire all weapons at the same time - or state it had a dodgy reactors - i'm of the opinion that the nova was the equivalent to artilery - not subtle or pretty but it got the job done - no military would develop a ship that was faulty in sucha serious manner - it never would have gotten through military trials - and it wasn't beacuse they were ina rush during the war the nova was already in service before the minbari war

Ahem, KillMeNow, militaries have had faulty solutions for quite some time. Example: HMS Hood, retrofitted with extra armor, oh wait, they forgot this one little spot that was directly over the main magazine ... and a 15" shell dropped striaght down there blew the ship apart - yeah, one hit. Boom.

And that's from 1940, you can bet there's a chain of examples running into history and a ton now, as well. History repeating...(hums propellerheads song)

So I'd believe Novas would be fitted with a ton of heavy guns - they just couldn't muster the reactor power to fire them all at once because perhaps their old reactors weren't upgraded, and EA figured "well, uhm, they can hit anything at any angle, just not all at once." If they needed heavy ships fast, then a 'quick' upgrade job like that makes more sense...throw 'em into space now, gear up for more efficient, new ships (Omegas) while the half-upgraded Novas 'hold the line' as it were.

Nova's were the Windows 95's of the EA fleet.

They had some problems.

Only Babylon Wars from AoG stats that Nova's were fully retrofitted with beam weapons on all turrets.

I'm sure AoG did that for playability rather than anything else, so people could easily know what the ship's capabilities were.

Also not being able to fire all guns at once is not a terminal disadvantage as at long range how often do you have enemies on all sides? These are effectively the "artillery pieces" of the EA fleet and would stay back unless the situation was desperate. Unfortunately this was all to common a situation during the Earth-Minbari War.

Maybe, thats because it is the *only* canon source on the Nova...

Posted by IceFire on 10-27-2001 03:00 AM:

JMS is pretty canon. I'm pretty sure he just said "Big Plasma Turrets".

Again, I do respect what AoG does....they, like us has to balance their ships. Theirs works quite a bit differently for us compaired to them, but its the same basic concept. Alot of what they did I like, but I don't like the alternating beam/pulse mounts on the Nova.

Nevetheless, that is what they did. But that is what they did for the Beta model. The Alpha Model is just Plasma.
