2 questions about Freespace 2.
Greetings. I would like to ask two small questions conserning Freespace 2. Please note that I`m a nevbie that dont know anything about coding or such.
Here goes:
1: How do I add music to the game, without having to brake anything, and without having to be a coder?
2: How do I make my own backgrounds for the loading screen and creating a new main "menu"?
Thanks.
Stargazer.

Hmm. A Babylon Project staffer would know, since they did both for TBP.

First of all, if you want to do any modifications to FS2 (like adding music as you said above) you'll want to get the Descent Manager tools that work with FS2. Their site is here:
http://www.descent-network.com/descman/
Near the bottom of the page they have a link to a Freespace 1/2 kit. (The kit makes it a little easier to download the stuff, you can get it all at once rather then bit by bit.) You'll probably need the DLL pack too. Once you have those you can get into all the easily moddable stuff in FS2. (Which is quite a bit.)
The music is just wave files, the file that tells which sounds go with which music set is music.tbl in the root_fs2.vp file. Use VPView32 to either look through the file (It'll run TBLView32 for you) or extract the file to a folder and look through it with whatever program you want. The .tbl files are just text files with info the game reads and uses. Those files are the heart of modding FS2. Once you know what music file names you want to override, save wave files with those names into the Freeespace2\Data\Music folder. Each music set consists of multiple files for different situations and moods. (Thus the music changes dynamically.)
As far as the main hall, you'll need the above mentioned kit and a graphics program that can save PCX files. The main hall is made of PCX graphics and animations in Volition's special .ani format. AniBuilder and AniView should come with the above mentioned kit if you want to do animations. The main table (.tbl) files for the main interface are menu.tbl and mainhall.tbl. Help.tbl has the help overlay that you see if you hit F1 or click a help button. (Menu.tbl seems to be older then MainHall.tbl which would explain why there are all those NULLs.)
Other people can probably help more and you could search through the older posts in HLP's modding forum.__________________

Animations are something I haven't gotten into, but it looks like bright green (0 255 0) is the transparent color.

This pack you told me about looks interesting. I only got to download it yesterday, and are now poking around the different programs. Interesting indeed. Thanks for all your help...

Adding music is easy if you do it properly. Save your music as 22 kHz, ADPCM wave files. You can do that with Goldwave (http://www.goldwave.com). Then put the music in your /data/music folder....use VPView32 to extract the music.tbl file (from Root_FS2.vp I think) and put the music.tbl in the /data/tables directory.
