Unhappy Freespace 2: crash in game everywhere

Hi! here is the problem,

My friend's computer:

msi kt7 pro
k7 thunder bird 700
192 ram
ge2 mx 400 -> quodra 2 32ram
sound blaster audigy de

driver version:
via 4 in 1 -> 4.37
nvida 29.42
directX8.1

OS:
Win98SE

hmm...like title, just crash in game everywhere. In briefing, in mission, on main menu, in control config menu...all of them have a chance to crash. Crash let the screen freeze, then we need to restart windows. Is that video problem?Or sound problem?Could anyone help us?

Colud be many things. The strange thing is that it is not crashing only while you play a mission, but everywhere. Do you have this problem with other games or applications? I would recommend that you first reinstall the game. If it has been done already, check for any harware conflict, and run a directX diagnostic, just to be sure.

The freeze may also be due to a damaged RAM, or a processor overheating.

Thanks for your reply~

Other games like Q3, Dungeon Siege will also crash on the same situation.
But many games like Star Craft, D2x, WarCraft3, Counter-Strike, sof2 test, rtcw...have no problem when running.

DirextX diagnostic has no problem.

Maybe the problem is the ram, we will check it.

Hmm... If some games work and some don't, you may have to get newer drivers for your video card. Also, you may need more RAM or a faster processor. It is probably not the video card, but that is a possibility...

Hi everyone!

I think we found where the problem is - a damaged HD.

He put that HD to a mainboard which has HDD S.M.A.R.T. capability(It is stranged his k7T pro doesn't have that capability) and displayed error immediately.
(Another strange thing is FS2 didn't install on that HD!!)

So he took it off and computer is normally now.

Oh yea!We can play FS2 without computer crashing!

FS2 ->really exciting game, even is an old game.

Again, thanks for helping!
