Question Networking

I know that you don’t like people using this forum for non-TBP related things, but I have
been unable to get a straight answer anywhere else and I need help so here goes:

This weekend I upgraded my RAM and in doing so gained the resources to create a
network between my computer and my fathers so we can play games. However I am
running Windows XP while he is running Windows 95. I plugged everything in they way
the people at the store told me to and ran the XP setup wizard. It was all a very nice
program and it was very congenial, however the wizard disk that it says to use on the
other computer is only compatible with Windows 98 or newer.
So does anyone know how I can get a network working between 95 and XP. I'll take
any advice that will guide me to answers.

Note: We are running a straight cable between the machines without a hub or any other
sorting devices.

instead of doing that go into your Card properties in XP and goto TCP/IP settings

put in the IP fields

Ip address -: 192.168.0.1
Subnet Mask -: 255.255.255.0
Default Gateway -: IP of other Ethernet card if using Cable modem or 192.168.0.1

And u will need 2 dns servers

then do the same in 95 except put your Ip address as 192.168.0.2
and Default gateway as 192.168.0.1

Hope that Helps

Get a hub! If you've got a cable or DSL model, get a Router. Much better that way.

A hub??? No need for that to connect 2 Pc's... and I got myself a 2 Pc network... (Winxp and Win98).
Probably assigning Ip adress to both amchines will be required since one of the Pc's is running under Win95. (I got mine in Ip automatic mode)
Also many people forget to put all machines into the same workgroup name.
Frequently Win98 and Win 95 "forget" to install network Microssoft client protocol, thats necessary to play.

Do you have any idea how unstable a non-hubed network is? Its bad, very bad. Although I suspecct XP is pretty good about it. I started networking back in the days of Win95.

naah, a non hubbed network's relatively fine with only 2 PCs, and with old fashioned coax connections we managed a 4 PC network without too much hassle... but with more than 2 PCs I'd seriously recommend a hub.
