It is always better to edit old message rather than post a short message that fixes or adds something written in previous message.

You can edit your old messages, so ask yourself it it is necessary to post a message right after another. If it is not necessary, then edit old message rather than posting a new one.

Example: You wrote "I meant the Klingons how the were in the Original Star Trek!". Instead of posting a new message, you could have edited your old message. Either by fixing that error or added that statement to the end of your old message.

Why needlessly post messages? It is often considered spamming and lame way to increase post count.
