And the series has something with neighter StarWars nor StarTrek have:
The technology isn't that far ahead. It's more "realistic" and the Federeation was always to brave for normal humans (and aliens) in my eyes. I think thats why the Klingons are so popular, because the are more like real humans (20th century) than the Federation.
