There are some bassic rulez refering to the ship naming that we use(or used to use since nobody seems to care).

Omega - greek gods and Herrows Ajax,Achiles,Agamemnon, Zeus, Hermes, etc
- roman gods Demeter, Vesta,etc
-"weird ones" Roanoak, Churchill etc perhaps this are latter series.
-----------
Hyperion/Midwinter Class:
-old greek gods(or Titans): Prometheus, Hyperion, Morfeus, Hypnos, Helios
- name of famous battles: Alamo,Lexington, Saratoga,etc.
-----------
Warlock class:
-here we didn't saw many of those so basic names would be something like:Werewolf,Necromancer,Warspite,Warhammer,Scimi
tar,etc
-----------
Olympus clasee :
- cities and rives names : Rhein, Danube, Chicago, London, Don, Moskva, etc.
-what ever else u like.

AdvOmegaX :
-Archonox,etc

I originally wanted people to name classes, but we threw that out the window.

My persoal convention is that any SF author name is an Explorer class, names previously used by military ships should be as close to those ships as possible. (Yamato, Bismark and Arizona would be heavy-gun oriented ships.) Additionally we could apply some names to on- canon ships.

I seem to recall JMS saying in one of the epiode guilds in the Lurkers Guild to B5 website, that this was indeed the case. The Greek named Omegas are the earlier ones with the 'weird ones' (to quote) being the more modern Omega

Does anyone not think that Roddenberry would rather be immortalized in an exploration vessel rather than a combat ship?

exploration ships probably would often not be part of the military anyway, so it would depend on the corporation funding the expedition as to what they would name it. SF authors are indeed possible. Same goes for transports and freighters.

To be honest there are conventions for naming of classes of ship today, and they're still broken some of the time.
