Getting butts kicked, just to ask why not just all the way killing with couple Sathanas (assuming they had those back then). When you go war you'll go out with all might.
Ancients also had beams and Shivans didn't fool around with them. On FS2 Shivans really didn't have much intrest on GTVA (as they had on FS1), they concentrated on Capella sun not to GTVA.
Assuming you're right Shivans would have squashed GTVA like a mere bug, so why they wouldn't just do it?

Where you guys getting this stuff.
Ancients were technologically similar to the GTA/PVE at the beginning of The Great War with the exception of subspace technology. Thats based on information gleaned from Volition. Ancients did not have beam weapons. Ancients had trouble with shield systems...but as we saw, their mastery of subspace technology allowed them to figure out that shields did not work in subspace and that the Lucifer or a like vessel would be vulnerable.
Ravana's are similar in hull strength to the Demon class destroyers and are not anywhere near that of the Lucifer. Based on game stats and relative damage potentials of weapons on the Demon in FS1 and the Ravana in FS2 (BTW: The Demon's table entry was almost unchanged).
Based on FS2 Intel room data, the Lucifer's destruction ended the rest of the Shivan advance...apparently the Shivans became completely random in their movements and were eventually irradicated from GTA/PVE space. We can surmise that the Lucifer and its type may be central nodes of intelligence for Shivan operations and that may tell us why they were protected so heavily with shields. The Sathanas seems like an entirely different type of vessel designed to collapse stars.
Essentially all of that data is from dialogue in the game or tech room data from either game. Some of what you guys are saying has no supported basis...if there is, present it and I will believe you.
As to the question of why Terrans and Vasudans survived the Shivan onslaught when the Ancients did not...the monologue at the end of FS1 tell us that we survived is because we were able to adapt...the Ancients we can potentially make the argument had a huge empire (hundreds of worlds are mentioned in the Ancient monologues), perhaps were more static in their ideologies and technological advances. Against overwhelming odds, the Terrans and Vasudans managed to do something different...band together, steal and develop technology to combat their foe and manage to get lucky with a bit of help from the past. And they paid a heavy toll for it: the destruction of Vasuda Prime's surface and millions or billions dead, the loss of innumerable major warships, political instability (HoL, GTI), and so on.
Adaptation is key to the ideals of evolution and survival. Its a FreeSpace theme.
