I find something wrong with a character-driven game where everything takes place in the cockpit. It doesn't work. It's trying to assign RPG qualities to a game with an engine that doesn't support it. It's definitely supposed to be impersonal.

Oh, puh-leese, you don't need to be able to get experience points and reach level 20 with your half-elf ranger for a game to have not nameless characters

Character-driven doesn't mean upping the HP, and lvl every few hours, it means you can do things with dialogue and mission scripting that you can't do with a nameless/faceless alpha1. If you do it right, it can even be, to an extent, interactive. [url="http://www.3dap.com/hlp/hosted/the158th/"]ITN[/url] is doing something similar, although on a slightly different scale.

Its not revolutionary by any means...but what it comes down to is preference of the designers. Kellan and I wanted to tell a specific story and we felt characters were important to use. Some of my biggest complaints with campaigns is that there is no story...just a collection of engagements that have no real meanings. So, we've spent all this time considering motives, events, counter motives, etc.

We hope we do well in that regard...
