i especially love the missions where you are in something powerful (ares, herc II, erinyes) with powerful weapons (kaysers) and have to do heavy dogfighting with fighters and picking off bombs and bombers in the spare moments, gradually working ur way closer to the destroyer that is launching them, and assisting in bringing down its guns until you or friendly bombers can give it the coup de grace...
BUT that's just me and it tends to mean a tougher mission...

Those kinds of missions are there.

I love assult missions, but they are too short. You always win, and once the targets have been destroyed, they're destroyed. Defense missions are long and heart-pounding. I voted for assault anyways.

By the way, load up all helios or cyclops on an Ursa. Make sure you are at 0 velocity. Put all engine energy into engines, PageUp. Press period on the number pad (. Del) until you are looking at the ship from the top front. MAKE SURE YOU CAN SEE BEHIND THE SHIP! Afterburn until around 40m/sec (you must have quick reflexes) and fire two bombs. Keep afterburning until you get to full afterburner speed. Deply three countermeasures. Watch the bomb chase after them!

I've tried this before, but it has never worked. During defensive missions, when bombers fire bombs, I tried getting on the same direction as the bomb. I fly until maybe 50m ahead, then deploy countermeasures to see if the bomb will lock onto my target instead. It has never woked. Can someone else try this for me? See if they have any luck.

Not always - I'd love to see the mission where your grand assualt on the enemy is going so well, their cruisers and corvettes are dropping like flies. But just as victory is at hand, the large enemy force that recon somehow missed appears out of no-where and slams into your poorly protected flank.

So assualt turns into desperate defence as that flagship you are so charged to protect runs like hell!!

Assault missions are great...

...but the best missions for me are those special missions you had in FS1. Like capturing McCarthy, and capturing the Arjuna 1, scanning all of the ships that jump in, while trying to stay away from the sentries and the other Arjunas, and then get discovered, and then get killed if you play on insane...or maybe the one where you have to take out the Comm system so that the cap-ship wouldnt call their reinforcments etc. There weren't any missions like that in FS2 main campaign...at least I can't remember. Except the SOC missions. Those were hella fun, like "Into the Lions Den".

I prefer missions with large plot elements over simple pointless engagements...

even if that mission does start out as a simple lame-ass turkey shoot, as long as something nasty happens that results in lots of focused action, massive lightshows/explosions and changes of tactics, i'd be happy...

Even though those missions are action-packed you must remember: Alpha 1 can't make an appearence at every single important battle.
In FS1 was Alpha 1 present at the tombaugh attack?
Was Alpha 1 on the scene at the Battle Of Vasuda Prime?

True...but as the 101st BlackWater squadron, trouble comes to you...no need to find it

Is the 101st some kind of elite top secret squad like the 99th skulls was in the FS2 campaign?

More permanent than the Skulls.

Err... a capship duel maybe? Like, two destroyers of each side in a war just happen to stumble across each other. You choose whether to bomb the enemy destroyer or intercept enemy bombers.

EDIT: Maybe a "save the planet" mission like killing the Lucifer or the Sathanas. This would be a three-mission thing. In the first mission you would do as much damage as possible to the enemy ship. The next mission would be in subspce, and you would still be pounding it. The third mission is outside subspace and is your last chance to destroy the enemy capship. If you are saving a planet, the mission would end when the enemy jumps out. If you are saving a certain ship, the enemy would start shooting at the ship you have to save in the third mission. Kind of like the Bearbaiting and High Noon missions.

Assault missions in Erinyes (lots of guns and missles but still in a fighter) and SOC MISSIONS! Those are the best and the ones that the most memorable lines come from. I point you to Lt. Cmdr. Snipes.

Second SOC loop r00lz all!

You'll be pleased to know that a certain somebody from FS2 makes a return during BWO. And I don't mean Bosch. And his lines are still memorable (I hope).

We're also hoping to make slightly more persistent squadrons than in FS2 - ie. you run into them more than once, know the squad leader, that kind of thing.

You mean...SNIPES?!?!??!?!
Actually, having Bosch return somehow would be very interesting and could make for some extremely strange plot twists.

BWO is not going to be that strange.

What do you mean, Snipes...I didn't say anything...

Killadonuts breaks the silence

I would like to see more subspace missions.
I feel that function of both the FS1 and FS2 engines has gone to waste.
The Main FS2 Campaign doesn't use it at all.
The Main FS1 Campaign only uses it once.
The only other time I play them is during Derelict or when I feel like toying around with FRED

We only have a single mission in subspace planned. The fact of the matter is, subspace is an incredibly limiting environment. The background is always the same, since there's no shields you can't use flak or bombers, etc.

It makes it more of a challenge then.
But I'm glad BWO is going to have at least one subspace mission.

The challenge is making a good mission...and I think there have been 2-3 to date that are actually good missions. One from Derelict and the other from FreeSpace 1's last mission. And that mission used modified Harbinger's just so you wouldn't get nailed by the big shockwave.
