I'll try to save this topic: Let's have some speculation about what the Shivans were trying to accomplish with the supernova.

Already been tons of that, i think this topic is drier than a very dry thing. Most reasonable guess was they made a node of some sort.

Not really.

Nebula's still have gravity... but is this strong enough to allow the usage of intrasystem jump drives?

Think how far Nebulas can go... one of the pilots in FS2 even said that the nebula could be 20 light years across.

If this is true and the gravitiation field of a nebula allows for use of intrasystem drives then the shivans could very well be creating a vast region of space where they could travel with ease.

Or perhaps they just couldn't be bothered to take the effort of fighting a longer war and pulled in a few Sathanasi and nuked the system. Just like when you can't be bothered to a disrupter gun and take out 'that ships' engines, so you use an torpedo instead. Simple, effective, over kill... but it gets the job done.

But honestly, I don't know since I'm not a Shivan or have any idea what they where thinking at the time.

Maybe they the star super-novaed by accident. Possibly they were trying to reconfigure the internal reactions or something, and it backfired..... and a few didn't react in time.

Note To Self: Silence Aldo; he knows too much.

Maybe we should ask a shivan

Posted by Turnsky on 11-11-2001 07:24 AM:

I'll use my somewhat limited knowledge of astrophysics here and try (i say TRY) to explain one or two things:

1. not all stars supernova, some of the matter remains and congeals together and makes a neutron star (thin 10x density or so of our own sun) then collapses even further on itself to make a black hole( 100x density or so). there should be ample gravity one way or the other

2. or, the nebula gets more and more dense the further you go into it, there for it may be quite possible to have jump node the a gravitational "mass" without having a planet or a star, it could be made up of various bits of matter (Hydrogen & helium most likely)
and they are closer together in the heart of a nebula than on the outskirts, that, and radiation higher at the heart of some nebulas.

*breathes deeply*

I think i'll shut up now. if i got this around the wrong way i did say i'll Try didn't i?

Its probably a neutron star thats allowing for subspace travel. Neutron stars typically form when a star collapses in on itself rather than exploding in a supernova, but I could be wrong and I think both could happen too.

Question

What does this have to do with Japanesse pottery?

Anyway, doen't neutron stars have to grow into a white dwarf, then into a red giant ect. untill they reach the supernova/black whole part?

Posted by Turnsky on 11-11-2001 11:18 PM:

errr... no red giants are when stars roughly the size of earth's run out of fissionable materials and start to burn out slowly.

Supernovas happen when a really big star's materials react all at once and explode.

Neutron stars happen when a star explodes and then all the widely distributed material from that explosing starts going in again and forms a rather dense object with a very high gravitational force, black holes happen when a neutron star collapses even further in on itself.
