lol going back to the classical Deus Ex Machina

You gotta admit, some missions are where FRED gives you crappy orders. FS1 for example, you're trying to escort the escape pods to the science station from Beta Aquaile. You have this heavy weapon which takes forever to lock IF AT ALL against a Dragon which can move twice as fast as you. You have I think 8 ships to protect half a dozen escape pods against Shivans with Hornets. That's crapshoot at best circumstances. If you tell your wingmen to go after the fighters, you lose the escape pods. If you tell your wingmen to protect the pods, they get killed bc AI doesnt recongnize the enemy's shooting. If you tell them to engage, same result as A. That's a crappy situation.

They got better-looking ships...(come on, people...Mara vs. Hercules mk.II)

I dont really pay that much attention to the AI anyways...they seem to do little more than tie up the enemy fighters...I played through the game on every mode...and it seemed they lasted about as long on every difficulty...

I do it like this: when there is a lull in the fighting, ill send the damaged bombers and really damaged fighters home...but im not going to take my valuable time during a lightfight or bombing run to send my boys home. I say, if you get shot down, eject your dumbass out, and float home, cause you suck. as for me, I typically fall to beam cannons...especially the big ones (im always between capital ships and get hit by that lovely LRed or BGreen cannon)...although i have a knack for flying right into that cyclops torpedo...

So, do you actually care what happens to your copilots, or not?

Depends on the mission. If your flying support for a bomber wing, They need to live and should be top priority. If you are flying a bomber, screw the wingmen, your fat's in the fire. When flying intercept, wingmen are useful but if your good enough (i mean realy REALY good) you don't need them. When flying scout in a neb. they are your navigators. without them, you're lost.

Wingmen

Wingmen are most useful for doing the tasks I hate, such as protecting capital ships from bombs. (They are good at this). This means I get to chase the bombers.

Also, I prefer it if they come back with me.

Having read all of the above, it could make mission design interesting. Imagine having one of your goals being to bring back all of your wingmen alive.
