-- Escort Destoryers (http://volitionwatch.papageorgefamily/vwbb/showthread.php?threadid=5874)
A cruiser should not have BFG beams, it just doesn't work. Leave them for the destroyers.
Beware over-specialising a cruiser. An all anti-fighter warship would be useless if it came face to face with a enemy cap ship, and an all beam turret, or one with little AAA, would be swamped with enemy fighters.
I think the current Cruisers are medium sized general purpose warships for supporting wings during a dog fight and larger cap ships during a fleet action, and the next generation ones should stay that way!
Cruisers also have many other duties, such as shipping lane protection and patroling. A cruiser design that is AAA or Beam only won't fullfill those duties very well.
Plus, a beam only warship generally is unrealistic. Even the Big G in BWO has seperate normal weapons. (Right, IceFire?)

A Pure Anti fighter cruiser and a pure antiship cruiser side by side would be uber.

Think how todays navy's work. At the heart of the fleet is one or more carriers; they provide all the air power necessary to protect themselves, and the rest of their support fleet.
The support fleet is made up of medium class ships mainly fitted with missiles.
If this were done in the FS universe, then you'd have one or more carriers which house all your fighters, then a bunch of cruisers and light to medium escorts. This group would always remain together, thus insuring that all vessels are covered.
The escort ships would provide a screen around the carriers, and in turn, the carriers would provide fighter support and bomber protection for the escorts.

I agree. I used a BFRed on Leviathan once, it was good, but in general, abnormal would I say. Used in one mission was nice, but generally, it doesn`t work good, doesn`t look well.

Yeah. Cruiser is always just a cruiser and has other duties. It makes no sense ( not mentioning it`s unrealistic) to rearm them to destroyer firepower.

I think 1 BFGreen 4 SGreens and a LTerSlash is also too much. Hell...thats almost more firepower than a Hecate destroyer. If your going to have a strike cruiser class vessel with a BFGreen...that should be all it has...plus a Terran Turret or two.

This is a summary of my Sleipnir (unposted) corvette design idea;
Corvette with 4 flank / broadside AAAf , and one big frontal facing beam (whatevers closest below BFGreen, I think).... flies in across the face of the enemy, firing it's main gun as much as possible, and warps out once it can't lock on the enemy anymore... guerilla tactics.
Possibly an underside beam to 'catch' the ship as it basses underneath -depnding on balancing... there's obviously the entry / exit delay thing, so either the ship should be slow and reasonably well armoured - or fast and fairly light. A rapid short range jump reactor would be necessarry.

Which is exactly what Aeolus cruisers are for. Which makes me shudder everytime a campaign introduces three new corvettes and removes cruisers alltogether. Cruisers are VERY important.
