OK here's a question if SOL has been isolated for around forty years do you think they may have thought up some non subspace FTL travel.

maybe big hint maybe not.

That would be cool but they would have to make sure their flight path was completly clear. Otherwise they would end up just splatting on a rock. According to some theory (i think it was Einsteins E=mc2) that if you hit even one spec of dust at the speed of light the resulting explosion would be incredibly huge.

you forgot the fact that near Eirth sollersitem is a large astoryd feald.

Posted by IceFire on 07-22-2001 04:59 PM:

Umm, yay for spell check and accuracy.

There is one major asteroid belt in our solar system (thus Sol). That belt is located between Mars and Jupiter. It was most likely a planet that was pulled apart by Juputers immense gravity and was distributed along the former orbit of that planet.

There is also the Kupiter belt past Neptune...and infact, Pluto is probably not a planet and actually a Large Kupiter Belt Object. Now I know less about the Kupiter belt, but there are objects out there as well.

As for not forgetting, I don't even begin to understand what you were talking about. FTL travel and asteroid belts have little to do with them.

Yes, the kinetic energy released on impact with a spec of dust traveling at near lightspeed would be particularly deadly.

dude, its kuper!

also, once you get out of the system, the only real limitation on sublight intersystem travel is how long you can keep the crew alive, the ship funtional, and the ship's drive operational (that includes fuel) it would take a long time to accelerate up to the fractions of lightspeed neccessary to make the trip worthwhile and not a complet waste of time.

as for hitting something. thats what navigational deflectors are for. all you need to do is set up a set of fighter sheilds ahead of the ship in question in the form of a wedge wich would intercept any particles or micro meteorites. this ship would also be equipped with an AWACs class sensor system tied into an automated defense system set to clear anything that the dflectors could not handle.

Nope, it's Kuiper.

An interesting thought.... screw mucking around with AM drives and C-fractional speeds. Instead, simply start making 'insystem' subspace jumps on a beeline to Alpha C. I'm sure you could do it, it's the gravity of stars that causes jump nodes, but subspace itself should be persistent.

You mean you don't like my mission?

What mission? I was speaking of the general concept.

I know you were; I forgot the </p1mp>....

The mission is set in Alpha Cen in the days before the Charon Sol Jump Gate (yes, from BWO...) becomes operational. I also have a bit of fiction to go along with it, get it via my site (in siggy). It's a fun mission, and you can actually relax in it and let it flow, just like a good book.

Can we get some info on SOL ships?

Posted by IceFire on 08-12-2001 12:12 AM:

Then that would totally take the fun out of learning about them as you fight them

We'll show off a bit later....right now they still use temp textures...and we want those to be a bit nicer before we go public with them.

Damn right... I have this picture in my head of a cruiser sized vessel, not considered much of a threat, moving in toward a Golgotha, then out of nowhere, a Hella Bigâ„¢ Laser pulse flies into the [G] and takes it's hull down to 50%...

Of course it can't fire very fast, maybe once every 40 seconds, but still, that's Hella Dangerousâ„¢.

You're thinking of the MT Sol ships, not the BWO Sol ships.

I am? I actually knew nothing of the MT ships... I honestly haven't been paying attention to any campaigns besides BWO... and even here, I have a very short attention span... Good to know though
