I know they're better, it's just my old soundcard's an AWE 64 and won't plug into one.

I had an AWE64 from the day they were brand new ($200 f0rkin' dollars) to this summer in an old box, and the thing wouldn't die, but there are a lot of reasons as to why I'm glad I upgraded. Multiple sound streams, better quality, running a 4.1 without an external amp (sure the AWE64 says it can, but...yeah. Had problems.)

OK. A Soundblaster Live! 5.1 OEM is $32+$4S&H at newegg.com

That means for a mere $36 your problems are solved.

Of course, since you're in the UK, I don't think Newegg ships there but I know you can find a retailer that'll at least come close to that price.

but that's $36 - say about £27

£27 =

18 pints of beer

20 trips to and from my girlfriend's house

18 episodes of B5 at The Works

3 Zip disks

2700 penny sweets

Now the question is, can you work out where Xaphod lives from that information?

From the price of the beer alone I would have to say in the north-east of England.

Edit: Just checked his homepage - his university is indeed in the north-east of England.

actually, I can get 27 pints of beer for that, but I didn't want to make you feel jealous.

Would that be the watered-down type they often sell in student bars?

I know my student (Oxford college actually - we don't seem to have a central student organisation) bar and they don't water it down. But they do charge £1.65 for the privelage. I can get £1 a pint back home in Nottingham!

£40 it appears to be.. that's a lot of beer

- and it's real beer from proper Weatherspoons pubs - uni charges over £1.50

I still think I've got the edge here. That Live'll last you the next five years, minimum. That beer'll last you maybe a week.

Besides...it's not like beer's going to disappear.

Ah, Whetherspoons; that'd explain it.

Great pubs for cheap beer, it's just a shame they all get so damn busy. Their chips are to die for as well.
