I think that could be workable,
start with the frame, and the stats (wich could be set from the tables as a SCP change) and have a light go from dark to light with the ship in the middle, and open a little window with a wire frame of the ship that rotates

Make the main image of the ship move a little bit.. make it more interesting.. shouldn't be hard making it loop though.
The stats on the screen in the episode are results of the scan on the starfury, so would probly be things like "reactor output" and "life support" with some numerical reading afterwards.
Oh, and the stats "write" onto the screen one character at a time.. not sure if you want to emulate that.. I always think that effect's cool

that's cool Bobbau, though I think the background ship should maybe move slightly..
plus it might be an idea to use a high poly model of ships for the animations..

i'd prefer ingame models to be used personally xaphod, textures will look different
not so sure about the nboarder, i realise it look like in the screens xaphod posted, but how about making it fit in with the freespace 2 interface, its look nicer that way
other than than i like it, how about making the model in the background slightly bigger ...remove some of the shine too..."too much!" 
i'll have a go myself at some point
if your going to make our ani bob consult with me first please...I have an idea to put to you
