-- Poll: Do you care about what happens to your AI copilots while playing FS/FS2? (http://volitionwatch.papageorgefamily/vwbb/showthread.php?threadid=7608)
I try to preserve them by killing everything in the area before they get there. Another thing is I never send them out in singles - always pairs or by the wing. I also charge straight at anyone who dares to shoot at them at full burn with my primaries blazing.
BTW: What's the "bonus turret" in Bearbaiting? Is it the rear mounted LRed?

I thinks it is as many turrets you can get as it makes it easier in the next level.

Also, in that mission where you fly the Ptah, the more turrets you take out the better. They won't bother you in the next few missions. Too bad you can't take out all the turrets with the Disrupters. The Sathanas warps out in like five minutes.

I simply send them back immediately...and then it becomes hell in space(I play it on hard)
Actually it becomes more fun to play too...

I care, only because they're great help sometimes; what I usually do is tell them to protect me during dogfights, so that they'll still shoot but stay near me for the most part; its when they drift off solo that they get slaughtered. If I'm charging bombers, I usually just tell them to engage, bombers really aren't a threat to AIs, atleast not much of one.
Capital ships on the other hand, I find best to tell my wingmen to form up on me and then lead them close before I tell them to engage; that way you're drawing most of the fire going in and the ais dont try to use any bombs too early, which otherwise get shot down and kill your wingmen with shockwaves.

I've never noticed that brining wingmen back alive gets you more points. I ran through the whole game once with cheats where all wingmen (unless indicated by FRED) came home alive at 100% and still got only to Commander (as high as I did w/o cheats in real game on "insane").
For me, wingmen are actually a big deal. Usually, I order them to take out enemy fighters instead of them concentrating on the mission objectives (sometimes stupid AI just gets them killed anyway). But backup support is always good. For those critical missions, even if they are at critical, they gotta stay. One more wingman is one less enemy on your tail.

i always watch out for AI in-mission... when i see the "dots" on the middle right turn red, i usually send that AI ship out... tlel it to depart.

Generally a mission where all of your wingmen or only one is lost is a well-put together one where some effort is taken on the wingman AI to have them fight properly.

BINGO! was his namo
Heh, there we go.
"No, Commander, it wasn't my fault! Some crappy mission designer gave the wingmen crappy orders to begin with! You can't blame me!"
