Education is key. If people would just take the time to read a little bit more into the situation, we wouldn't have so many problems. Volition understands the fan's gripes, but unfortunately they just don't have the resources to do a lot about them.

If education is the key, how hard would it be for THQ/Volition to "educate" us stupid gamers about thier reasons for discontinuing support for the game? I would have been satisfied with a memo at the Red Faction home page saying something as simple as "Thank you for purchasing Red Faction, but we no longer have the resources to supply support for this product, we would like to thank the community for thier devotion to our product" THQ/Volition also has the resources to release the source code. That there would give us the ability to easily construct our own patch. The only reason Half-life has counter-strike is because they released the source code. If it wasnt for that Half-life would have been another game in the pile, but instead a few fans developed one of the most popular mods ever made for any game. If THQ/Volition has thier work properly copyrighted no one can steal the Geo-mod technology(there is nothing there that John Carmack doesnt already know how to do along with many other good programers). How about someone "leak" it to me hint hint T O D D

I think it was already mentioned earlier in this thread ... but if you want the quick and dirty answer to why RF isn't "supported" -- that answer is "MONEY"

The same answer applies to why RF2 isn't (currently) coming to the PC. Is that so difficult to understand?

I find that if you force them to register...it filters out the ppl that just wanna spam or ask one silly question...to the people that actually care.

Now I think if you cared about the info about this developing of the patch enuf, then you could take maybe 2 minutes out of your life to sign-up.

Or maybe you just wanted to read to see if that two minutes would be worth it. As in, don't allow anonymous posting but allow anonymous viewing.

Besides, making people sign up doesn't filter out spammers or "silly" people ... we have tons here, and they all registered!

Exactly what Easy said. Then why the hell cant Volition update their useless website for once and tell us why the game is not being supported. Hell they cant even fix the link for the forum or half the links on the community page. No they just leave the broken links there to show the game is dead. O thats right they dont have the time to work on those kind of things anymore. But they can come to it to add crap about RF2. Hell the screenshot of the week didnt change since I started playing the game. And i tried to get my links added to the communty listing. I emailed them 2 times but its still not there. They werent interested from the begining.

I just want to see something written from Volition or THQ stating the situation!

What is so hard about that? They can program a game but they can type a paragraph to let their loyal customers know whats going on and put it online.

Well, I think you all should know why [V] didn't continue with support for RF1.

The publisher of the game (THQ in this case) is the one that decides to continue with support for a game. The publisher is the one with the money, therefore the one with all the power. They have the final decision on if a sequel is made as well. The developer does exactly that, they develop the game. After the game is released, its in the publishers hands to decide what happens.

That is why [V] is not to blame, and thats a fact.

You have been Regulated. Goodbye.

They use a news system like most major websites do. When they make a RF news update...its posted to both sites. Its not done manually....almost nobody updates news manually.

Unfortunately I don't have time to sift through the RF links daily and see which sites went belly up. I had forgotten about the forum link. I fixed it. take that!

You must have miss read my post. I know RF isn't supported anymore, I know it's because of money. I would like THQ/Volition to tell me that with an official announcement. Shoot thier operating income is around $50 million and thier net income last year was over $30 million, I think they can spare a few thousand to have a couple programmers put together an sdk or make an update. The least they could do is release the source code. It would take the same amount of time to e-mail the source code to one of the moderators of this board as it does for the Volition guys to browse these forums and make silly posts.

Take Ravensoft as an example, for Jedi Knight 2. The community wanted a patch to prevent a 1-hit kill move that was being spammed by players appropriately called "A$$fighters" because they ran around backwards trying to hit you with a backstab. Lucas Arts ownes the copyright to the game. Ravensoft wanted to patch it, but they couldn't. So they released the source code with the patch in it. A few community members used that to make a patch (actually 3 or 4 different ones). A few other members began a thread asking for an official patch along with an e-mail campaign to Lucas Arts. The end result, a patch was released this month.

The thing is, Raven wasn't satisfied with how thier product turned out. I am sure Volition isn't satisfied with Red Faction. I am sure they don't like to see cheaters flying around. If I was a member of the project team I would try to help in some way during my off time (just as Raven did with JK2 , they didnt get paid to update the source code before it was released). John Carmack is the most recognized developer because of his devotion to making his games perfect. If he didn't do that we would have never seen Doom and for that matter Red Faction. He has made the FPS what it is today.

take that! lol. You didnt fix it! You linked it to the community links page. geez. O and it takes so much time to go through allllll those links. Just took me a whole 2 minutes and 13 seconds. Its really not hard to click the mouse button and see if a page loads. If a page error comes up, you remove the link. Yea that takes time.
And they wouldnt be "belly up" if the dam game worked right.

There's no way it took you 2 minutes. That's total bull. I don't know about you, but I actually know what I have to do every day, and I don't really have time to keep up with those links. Sorry this upsets you, but you're going to have to live with it.

The forum link is never going to be removed. It takes quite some time to add or remove a link from that nav bar. You may not believe that, but again, you don't really have a clue what goes into it. That's the best I can do with the time I have to give to the RF1 website.

[V] can't do anything htey want, you know. THey're owned by the publisher, which, in RF's case, is THQ. THQ is huge, and [V] to them is small and insignificant in the grand scheme of money-making.

EDIT: Claire Claws, I recognise you from somewhere... the NGI server maybe?

When I'm rich as hell, I'll buy V and force them to do FS3, FS4, FS5... all the way to FS7376, which should be enough. They'll be paid with peanuts and be forced to sing their uncomparable joy to work 25 hours per day for the most horrible boss one would ever have, me that is. Hehehehehehehe

But I'll never get rich. Too bad.

You'll have to buy THQ to get us to do anything. Also, you'll have to buy Interplay so we can use the freespace license.
